I have been thinking about trading my 660 for a banshee for a few years now and I think im going to do it, I was just wondering what's the best most reliable way to get 70hp out of one and how much maintenance would it need. how many hours on the crank, pistons etc.  anything to look out for? I really don't know much about them, I have an ad listing under the swap section.. trying to figure out how to post pics, send me a PM with your cell number and I have a few pics I could send.

70hp is pretty simple these days if you know your way around an engine.  My recommendation would be to call Jeff at FAST and get a serval kit ($1723) with everything you need, minus pipes, filter, timing plate, jets, and a clutch.

As with anything, it comes down to the measures you take to keep it running properly.  A solid build with great parts selection will leave you with a tanked engine if you don't tune correctly.  The lack of research and attention to detail are why so many platforms have a reputation of poor reliability, namely banshees.  Of course, if you mean reliable on all fronts, general maintenence will get you 80% of the way there.

At the end of the day, the difference between an engine that lasts a week and one that lasts 4 years is often a matter of skimping on less than a day's worth of work and a day's worth of income.

Power delivery. 70 hp from a Serval and 70 hp from stock cylinders are totally different.

Ah, I didn't think about that, good point.

ya there is because when you want 80whp then 90whp, you can easily get there with a serval. cant really do that with stocker.

Understood, but he asked about 70whp and didn't say anything about upgrading in the future.

Regardless though, larger motors = better power delivery and more fuel consumption.

I like to go on long rides, so fuel economy is important to me.

This is BHQ, how often does someone not want more power?

Yeah, I know..., but I don't fall into that catagory of BHQ'er.

I too am looking for 70-75 useable whp for shredding the dunes.

I need fuel economy, so keeping the displacement down as much as possible is key.

Just this last Labor Day, I rode with John T and Carlo in Pismo and in 1 ride I burned a full tank of gas and had to switch to reserve.

Pismo is only 1500 acres...
