Dialing in my 3rd Banshee

Greeting fellow banshees,

 

Haven't posted here for a few years but I just picked up a new shee and I know this is the place to come to ask questions.  Anyways I am no stranger to the Banshee but I have a few questions about how to make it run properly for my riding style.

 

The bike is a stock original 2000 banshee with maybe 15hours on it. The only aftermarkets are Noleen full exhaust and a prodesign uni filter and intake.  I believe I have the bike jetted decently.

 

Current temp is around 75F, elevation is around 800-ft, running 40:1 mix, 93 octane fuel, stock carbs with 280mains, 30 pilots, and 1 3/4 turn out on the air screw. I don't have the carb sync tool, but I have them set the best I could eyeballing it. I forgot to check the needle position when I had the carbs apart for cleaning.....   It runs real nice bottom mid and top, isn't fouling plugs, isn't breaking up

 

The riding I do is mostly technical trail riding, some but minimal fire roads, and hill climbs. 

 

I got to take it out Friday for a few good hours of hard riding and man does this thing run.  It putt putt's nice, it cruises nice, and I was passing 450's in the stretches.  The only time I felt the bike was lacking was when I was climbing technical hills, the bike is ALL top end.

 

I KNOW BANSHEE's are not a bottom/mid rich motor.  I have KTM300 and I would ride that if I wanted a 2 stroke lugger.  But with my current setup, I have been researching heavily on how to go about improving my bottom and middle of the power curve.  If I wasn't constantly keeping the motor full out screaming with the tires spinning, I wasn't going to make up this hills.  This makes it quite sketchy when your trying to dodge trees and rocks. 

 

My last banshee did not have this problem - It was mostly stock guy with gnarly pipes, prodesign filter and intake, and 28pwk carbs.  It had a nice bottom middle hit and still a strong top.

 

So my question is, what is a good cost effective solution to dialing this new dude with a broader range of power?  Obviously the gnarly pipes I used to have were low/mid pies, but I called the manufacturer and these Noleens are supposed to be an all around pipe (similar to fattys).  Through hours of research, I've found that if I really want a bottom ended machine, I want a cool style head, a timing advance, and proper porting.  In the future I may go this route but for right now I'm hoping to not dig into the motor since it's still fresh, and not completely break the bank. 

 

Any suggestions?  Carb adjustments to improve? 28pwk carbs? Give up on the Noleen pipes? Reeds/Rad valve?

I ride trails, hill climbs with one of my shee's and my jetting with stock carbs are 310 main-30 pilot-middle notch needle air box with pro design uni foam. Cool head with 21cc domes (stocks 22cc)FMF FATTY's on it and it has tons of low end and top end it pretty healthy also but trails with a banshee torque is good. Running a 13 front with 45 rear. Stock motor other than those.i had a buddy that had NOLEENS race pipes and he through them in garbage!! That's my setup works awesome up here in western Washington !!

Been doing tons of tons of research and started buying some parts. I have a adjustable timing plate from FAST in the mail and one of their sync tools. Planning on bumping the timing +2 or +3. I also called up Dave Noss yesterday and ordered one of his heads with 21cc domes.

 

Wanting a very conservative and reliable motor that runs on 93 pump gas.

 

Deadbeat and fernie - it's nice to hear someone even know what the hell they are! I can't find any info on them and I've even called Noleen. All they could tell me is they are "an all around pipe". I noticed last night while staring at them over a late night cigarette that the expansion chambers are different sizes and shapes from one another! This can't be good! I will boot them in time once my bank recovers from my recent purchases.

 

Future plans include some sort of reed improvement, pipes, and gearing. Pipes wi either be FMF fatty/powercore silencer, Pro Circuit/ 304 silencers, or maybe a Toomney setup. I've read maybe 30 comparisons on pipes and it seems to be 6 one way, and a half dozen the other unless your comparing Shearer drag pipes to the Paul Turner mid pipes. I know it also depends what gains you will get by your other mods, porting, ect.

 

My question on pipes would be which are the loudest silencers of the fmf, pro circuits, or toomneys? I'll have to look into the SLP'S - never heard of them. I want loud because where I ride there are no noise restrictions or neighbors to upset. It's actual good to be loud so the sxs's and dune buggy hear you and don't collide with them on blind corners and hills.

My noleen's are actually a very nice fit and finish. No better or worse than the fmf gnarlys I used to have on a previous banshee. I will upload pics in due time - I'm at work now and I was having Internet issues on my original post.

 

One thing I do really like about the noleens is how loud they are. They sound pretty darn good echoing though the mountains and my buddies fmf powercores on his banshee sound quiet.

 

If I want to be stealth I ride my KTM300! You can't hear that thing lugging a few hundred yards away.
