Carb ?'s / throttle cut out during power todays ride

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is covered in another tpoic but i didnt find. So yesterday i tried to go out riding and i couldnt get my bike started. Have a 03' with stock carbs, T5's, an K&N filter. basically stock. I flooded it trying to start yesterday, dumping gas out the overflow. Let it sit a bit and tried again but with no luck. Was trying to kick over but just wouldnt start. So i tried again today and started right up. Warmed it up a bit before i got my gear on but noticed after i shut off it still was dumping out the overflow. Took it out on the beach, wasnt getting into it very hard as i know Banshees dont really like the condensed air making it run lean but as i was riding the bike was trying to cutting out on me under throttle. I could clutch it and got it back going. I got a little nervous so i started to ride back to my truck. It actually did stall out and took a handful of kicks to get it back going. Talked to a buddy of mine and he said that its super easy to fry the piston and rings on the beach. Im a 2 stroke noob and trying to pick up as much info i can on my banshee. Plugs are new'ish and i know its easy to foul plugs but dont think thats the issue at hand. Any known issue for the overflow leaking, and issue with the throttle cutting out? Please be gentle! lol Thx in Advance

You need to tear the carbs down and clean them really good. I boil mine or use an ultra sonic cleaner. Those are not absolutely necessary, but you can't be too clean. Then set floats to 21mm. Since you have the carbs off, do a leak down test for shits and giggles.

Also post back here with jet sizes and temps you are riding in.

Again super new to 2 strokes...I would assume stock jet sizes. Im not sure if previous owner jetted it for the coast. But im in Florence Or. I looked and thought about tearing into my carbs and give them a good once over and hope i get them back correctly but a friend of mine that also has a couple Banshees told me that my bike has electronic carbs and that they arent the greatest. Told me to look into getting some "older" carbs as they are better. No idea on how to set floats or the test you are talking about to do.

Carbs probably have tors still. You can get an eliminator kit for about 30-40 bucks. Worth every penny. Google leak down test+banshee hq. Then buy a clymers manual. All stock carbs on banshees are 26 mm Mikunis.

^^^Certainly correct, but I was wanting to see for sure before telling him not to listen to friend anymore.

Odds are your needles are worn or cruddy to cause the fuel overflow, that and the floats out of adjustment are it.

I wanted to say your friend is a moron, but don't wanna stick foot in my mouth until the pics of carbs are posted.

Yep those are stock with TORS (throttle override system) still attached, ALL Banshees came with them.

Your overflow problem is carb related, but not those. When that system fails it simply will not run.

I see you were searching the leakdown test...do it

Check your jet sizes, they had best not be stock with your listed mods or you WILL melt it down.

Welcome to the HQ, and ask away and do some simple tests and maintenance before it costs you a rebuild.

Thx for the help...so now im researching doing the tors delete kit. which is the best out there and whatelse do i need so i dont get stuck missing parts? I found the thread of making the leak down kit. ill look into doing that shortly. Yes i dont want to melt down my shee. What size jets would be best with my T5's and filter setup? 26mm is stock?

Are you running a Pro Flow kit with that K&N?  If not, I'd recommend that or pods.  The factory filter setup isn't too great.

With T5s, K&N w/ lid, probably 260-290 main, toomey needle in 3rd from bottom position.  W/o lid, 290-340 main, 2nd from bottom would be a good start.  Start big and work down.  Try some 27.5 or 30 pilots as well.

As stated above, you'll want to leak test and set the float height.

My setup and elevation is close to yours and I'm at 340 mains, 2nd from bottom on needle, 27.5 pilots.
