DezertKing83
Wut up guys!! So finally got my bike all put together "4year build" and I've been trying to tune this monster every jetting I run is too lean "spark plug check" but today I finally got it into 4th gear and it bogged at 4th gear powerband... these are the Jets I tried and all the motor upgrades are on my signature... 1st set 142main 52pilot 2nd set 145main 55pilot 3rd set 148main 52pilot All had needle in middle for fine adjust if needed and air screw at 1.5 turns out! This is a trinity set I called trinity and told them my setup and they recommend these! Now I don't think I've gotten into 4th gear before but could the bog be from jets too big? If so why is the spark plug dry and charcoal? Shees running like a bat out of hell but guessing it's kuz it's lean?
Strm Trpr
Did you do a leakdown test to rule out any airleaks causing a consistent lean condition?
Mighty Shee
Mine would bog in 4th gear going up a hill because it had a leak between one of the carb boots and the reed cage. Once I fixed the leak no more bog.
Larry's Shee
Make sure fuel tank, pic-up screen, petcock, and fuel tank cap vent are all clean. double check float height.
lil Doobie420
What carbs are on it. I would check the pick up gap and do a leakdown.
sleeper06
More detail on motor specs why don't you go 165 main leave the pilot , what needle type
DezertKing83
I'm running 35mm keihen currently 58 main and 148 pilot needle clip on 6th position still dealing with lean conditions did a plug check it still looks a bit grey/charred and plugs are dry I been doing the choke on runs and the plug is still the same but wet... after I did the post I tried fully punching it and 4th didn't bog but 5th did! My take on it is if I'm not revving/speeding high enough then it bogs! But the power band should keep climbing? I don't have a leak down tester but when I first put her together I did have a leak it caused all kinds of issues but I redid everything retighten everything and the issues stopped... here's what's done to the motor.. 400cub 68mm bore Noss coolhead forgot the dome size but remember it's built for pump 91 ProDesign intake yes it has a boost bottle till I get caps Billet reeds and 1/2" spacer 35mm keihen k&n pods Barnet clutch basket HD discs stock springs lock out maxed Cpi oofs
trickedcarbine
I'm assuming you meant 58 pilot. 148 main. And needle on 6th position, are you talking all the way at the top or bottom. Pretty sure there is only 5 clips on keihin needles. None the less, dry and grey is lean. Give it more main, you should have more then enough pilot with a 58 in it. bluebanshee98
Being a cub your gonna really keep it in the higher rpm's to stay in the power. Like the others said give it more main. Are you sure your not short shifting it? Like going 3rd into 4th your keep it wide open and letting those rpms really get up before your shift
DezertKing83
OK I got pulled by the cops so I can't do test rides down the street anymore!! Haha I'm not fully fully rapping it up kuz I'm still in the break in process but yes yesterday when it bogged I slowed down "slightly" for a stop sign gave it a little go and shifted when I ran full it didn't bog on 4th but guessing did on 5th because I slowed down again! How many sizes should I jump at a time for the main? And yeah I meant 5th "bottom" of the needle for richness! I'm running it with the chokes on right now to keep it wet without its been completely dry through all the Jets I've been using! Is the 58 pilot OK or should I drop it? The initial response from trinity was to run the 55 and 145..
trickedcarbine
Stop riding it and friggin change the main before you hurt it. Riding with the choke ain't doing ya any good.
possum
short shifting and expecting to still be in the pipe. ffs
Larry's Shee
This ^^^ is your problem. As Tricked has mentioned, IF you don't get it jetted closer before you ride it you ARE going to hurt it. Riding with the choke on if it were anywhere close to correct jetting it would be blubbering like a short bus rider. If someone with a simular setup doesn't chime in as to jetting, look in the thread "What jets are you running" Also, post your elevation and riding temps, or where you ride, kinda specific area. DezertKing83
I only did the choke thing kuz I read up to ride with it on to see how much richer the jetting needs to be i.e. if it acts rich I don't need to upside but it's not the case.. I'm pretty much at sea level in San Diego been colder since the rain but not bad 70°f give or take..I'm gunnar have to bring the Jets with me and work on it when I head to superstition mtn on Thursday I'm gunnar put on the 158 I got if that doesn't richen it up I don't know then I might have to take it to somebody before I break sumptin! DezertKing83
@possum not short shifting just not letting the gear tap out at max rpm I'm breaking in and testing not dragging! I'm shifting prolly 80-85% of the top rpm range..
