bambam7689
Hey all I just picked up a 2000 banshee, seems to be in decent shape. I'm looking to make a project out of it eventually maybe by next winter but I want to get the first season Down ripping it up a little .. I've ridden 4 strokes my whole life and always had shops service my machine .. That gets expensive though so I was looking at taking this on all by myself ... I just want this thing to be in 100% mechanical shape before I ride it hard ... I've never bought anything used and I'm not quiet a wiz with an engine ... The bike seems to ride fine .. Idles pretty well.. But shuts off by itself after 7-10 min ... Then again I'm in ny and it was -1 today.. Not sure if that's normal for the bike... Seems to be running a bit rich on the right side... When I rev the bike and put my hand on the muffler I'll get some oil on my hand but not out the left .. Guy I bought it from said it only had 6 hours on the top and bottom end after rebuild... Starts up first kick maybe 2 ... When I rev it it seems to really be a bitch and putt around until it hits power band then all hell breaks loose... Not really use to that I use to have an 08 raptor 700 and that thing was torque city... Any suggestions for the bike though? What could be causing the oil coming out the pipe? He told me since it was only the 2nd tank of gas after the rebuild that he ran a little different mix 28:1 ratio but he told me on my next tank to put 32:1 ? What should I check? What should compression be? Any bold and bits sets I should invest in to make sure everything is secure? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated ... I know the very basics with small engine mechanics so please put it in dummy language for me lol ..
Larry's Shee
Find out if PO did a leakdown test, no matter you should do one yourself. List ALL of your mods (that you know of) size of jets in the carbs. I would highly suggest NOT riding until someone verifies you have the correct jetting. No, not normal to be shutting off after 7 minutes. Excess oil could be from leaky seal or carb sync or adjustment. Buy a Clymers Repair Manual. Least you didn't come here making 2 strokes or Banshees sound like some kind of fucking voodo majic
SandSlingerOR
Probably way more then 6 hours use I bet. Maybe start by, new plugs, 40:1 oil, maybe clean carbs, check jet sizes, make sure both air screws are the same turns out. Then see what happens
oldskool
Congratulations, Leakdown test. Youtube videos showing how to do this. Also a tutorial on here that shows you how to make a tester. clean carbs and jets. Sync carbs, again youtube. You will need to purchase this tool. A stock banshee should be around 125psi on compression. All banshee's forsale have a fresh topend or so they say, some actually do I guess. Jereme6655
Banshees live and die based on proper jetting. When the temp changes different jets are needed (depending on how much of a change in temperature there is) to keep the bike running correctly. Think of it this way...... an engine wants 14.7 to 1 air/fuel ratio (this is not your fuel/oil mix). That being said imagine your engine this way.....it wants 14.7 basket balls of air to swallow for every basket ball of fuel it swallows. Now when it gets cold there are MORE air molecules per basket ball of air......which requires you to add more fuel to compensate. REMEMBER......your motor is lubed using the oil that is carried in your fuel! So if your not giving it the appropriate amount of fuel.....its not getting the appropriate amount of oil either......this results in an engine running very hot and melting the pistons. MOST PEOPLE DO NOT JET THEIR BIKES TO RUN IN -1* TEMPERATURES! So put your bike away and dont screw with it until its warmer out.....like spring time. And remember for the future......a 2stroke WILL do a "death run" meaning it will run harder and stronger moments before it blows itself up.....its just their nature. So after you get used to how it runs......if for some reason it seems to suddenly greatly gain power out on a trail watch your ass.....or pack good shoes to walk back in. bambam7689
Thanks for the input guys.... I'll do the leak down, check compression, re Jett change plugs and all... I'll keep you guys posted and post some pics when I get this beast to where she needs to be
sleeper06
Where in ny are you, I'm in long island
bambam7689
I'm in the Hudson valley, any nice places to ride down there ? ... I'll be pulling it apart with in the next couple of days.. I'll take pics and post them and hopefully I can be advices of the most efficient jets because I'm not too familiar with them
bambam7689
So I just did a compression test… I'm getting 127 in the left cylinder and 125 in the right cylinder so compression seems to be fine on Tuesday I'll be takingapart the Jets and checking the Jets and also be doing a leak down test hopefully you'll check so I also took a couple of pictures but can't seem to upload them because the site is saying they are too large..also I'm not sure what is supposed to be stock on the bike and what is not. As far as I can tell the bike has a pro circuit exhaust on it
Larry's Shee
Intake and exhaust "pieces" are what matters (mainly) If it were ported the seller would have mentioned that as a selling point. So, do you have two filters on the carbs, or one filter in a box? Does the box have a lid on it? If so, does the lid have a snorkle that goes up under the gas tank? Example of difference in jetting. What would work for summer, would need to be 3-4 sizes BIGGER in the winter. Always jet on the rich side.

bambam7689
Well I haven't had time to take it apart yet... Freezing here In nY and my garage isn't heated but I turned it on today and I think I found an issue Got oil leaking and smoking out the right cylinder ... Smh idle is only getting worse on right side... Got some serious back fire and sometimes it sounds like it's not even running ... Except if gassed ... If it's gassed it screams like a mofo Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
bambam7689
Also since I am not that mechanically sound... Before I take out the carb and jets ... Could the fact that the seal where the right header connects and the pipe connects are leaking pretty bad be the reason is isles rough and is smoking and shooting some oil ?
