pp13bnos
First and foremost, I'm a numbers guy. I like being able to see improvements through dyno sheets, not by the seat of the pants. (My butt dyno isn't that accurate.) So, I've been searching the HQ looking for a before and after dyno runs with aftermarket ignition systems without much luck. If anyone has one, I'd love to see it. At this point I'm running a stock ignition on my stock cyl 7mill, that Cam at Redline put together. I'm running CPIs, 35mm pwks, v4s, straight cut gears, etc. If I can't find any sheets, I'm thinking I might call Cam and see if he has time to do a couple back to back runs. trickedcarbine
Timing is timing. Doesn't matter if it's from a different CDI or a plate. There is no doubt an improvement. The allure of the dyna or any programable CDI is to be able to change and tweak timing at all RPM's. That said, they Dynas and other knock offs are plagued with issues you would expect to not deal with when paying almost $400. That said. Adjustable timing plates are $50 and fool proof. pp13bnos
Yeah, I'm running a timing plate. I honestly don't know the difference in timing curves of the two units, but like the idea of being able to tune a curve for my motor. Of the group of people I run around with, 2 out of the 7 run a dyna on there bike. Both bikes are 4mm cubs, and haven't had any problems...so far. What intrigued me was that one guy had 7hp gain, but I suspect a dieing CDI was responsible for it.
trickedcarbine
Doubt that he had a failing CDI cause the 7 hp. The beauty of the dyna is the ability to add ALOT of timing early on to get the bike moving, then pull all that timing back as the RPM's go up. With the plate you can only give it enough timing till the motor is actually on the edge of fighting it self or detonating. So you are limited on how much you can add since the plate is fixed in one position. With the CDI imagine someone slamming the plate to full advance off idle, then rolling it back as the RPM's go up. If you have first hand info from guys you ride with, why look further?
pp13bnos
Because we're all pretty dam secretive! I wouldn't doubt it if something else was done to the bike at thesame time. Hell they didn't know i had a 7mill until after i beat them, and let em ride my bike. Anyone have a some sheets laying around?
SlowerThanYou
We have used both on the track for 300', 1/8 & 1/4 mile. The Dyna is quicker/faster with the proper curve, but we use the launch limiter & shift light also. Both the launch limiter & shift light help, but is the total gain from them only? I don't think so, but the only way to test that is to hook both up to a stock ignition with the timing plate. Just for information, based of our findings. Our best dyno tunes on the quad(s) & our other drag race vehicle(s). Never equated to the quickest & fastest times at the track.
Zillaguy
What about a digital PVL?
pp13bnos
I just thought I'd update this a bit. I was given a chance to borrow a dyna tech a little while ago. This last weekend I was able to finally take it out and try it. My brother and I (4mill cub, 92hp on Cascades dyno) went from a role in 3rd gear, to the top of 4th with a stock CDI a handful of times. Results where, I could creep away from him. Swapped out to the dyna, and did same tests. Results where that I pulled a little faster away, than with the stock CDI. More hp? I think so. Not a ton though. I will say, I thought the bike felt a little better coming off of the bottom end, and a bit crisper. This could be all in my head. Only way to test it would be to do a blind test. Might do that on a trip planned in late April to Florence Oregon. But, one negative thing I did notice was that the bike wanted to die, when rolling down into tree shots, or if you where trying to baby it leaving a parking lot. Seems like the bike was idling a bit lower. I was going to swap in some fresh plugs, and see if it reacted the same way with a new dyna that I ordered from Cam, and then maybe bump up the idle. On a side note, I love the way that motor pulls. Every time I ride it, I love it more. Highly recommend Cam and his customer service. Top notch for sure. pp13bnos
Yeah, my plan is to have cam do a custom map for it when he slows down a bit. Maybe in a decade or two.
