TheReaper
I've been using this forum for a while and I've finally decided to join and post. I just want to warn those who have not seen the damage these junk adjustable timing plates are, I have searched and found nothing with actual proof, maybe I didn't search well enough but here it is. I'm sure the billet ones are great but these cast ones are garbage. I've heard people for years talk about products being junk without actually using it or knowing someone personally that has used the stuff with no luck. So obviously when I heard these were junk I tried it anyway. I was thinking, they don't move, they really just hold the stator in place so I'll give it a shot. What's the worst that can happen? Well here is actual proof with pictures. The story, I had a stock stator go bad so I order a 200w DC conversion ($160) with plans to run hid head lights. At the same time I ordered a cast timing plate for $25 instead of a billet for $45 like I should have. We get out into the trails tonight and I notice my carbs are leaking fuel so we start heading back home after about 15min of riding, we are sitting on a trail the crosses a busy street waiting for traffic to pass when the banshee dies. My cousin tows me home, I check ohms on the stator are get nothing. I pull the cover and this is what I found. I used red thread locker and everything was tight. I'm assuming between the heat of the motor and the vibration this timing plate just cracked due to being junk pop metal and not quality aluminum like the stock. At the spots that broke, you can see the air pockets in the casting. . Edited November 10, 2014 by TheReaper

ETR174
Yeah dont really use red loctite as you have to use heat to heat it up and remove the bolts but also great example. I bought a nice Mattoon plate about a month ago and have no complaints whatsoever with it.
trickedcarbine
Ya, that's typical of an aftermarket cast plate. Had a RM plate let go of my brand new OEM stator from the dealer like 5 years ago. Fucking stator looked like some dirty meth heads teeth. I posted pics here, so maybe you didn't look hard enough for the proof. It's a bummer you got GOT. Hopefully this helps out some folks looking for a new plate.
