Anyone Up For Another Bhq Get Together?

This is just a curiosity kind of thing, but has anyone put together a map of the different states that people are from that are talking about making it out? I told a few people how far Walt was coming, along with a few others, and it sounds crazy, but it shows the devotion for a hobby/sport/addiction.

I'm so excited I don't think about much other than this at work. It will be my first time at the dunes in a year and a half. If my wife lands this job she interviewed for I'll be rollin PHAT, if not, I've got a few aces I can play (I think) <_<

Thought id add this to the motorhome conversation......

My dad has been driving truck for Fleetwood Motor Homes for 20 years, they allow the two truck drivers access to the motorhomes for their vacations. Every summer mom & dad have a brand new $100,000 dollar motor home for as long as they need\want it. Last one dad got was a brandy new Expedition, push a button on the dash and the living room area slides out and doubles the width of the coach, push another button and the bedroom slides out to double its size. Push another button and four large leveling jacks unfold and automatically level the coach. 25 inch color TV up front with a Direct TV satellite dish on the roof. 19 inch TV in the bedroom. DVD player\VHS player\full stereo surround. The bosses rarely take em out on vacation anymore so Dad's usually gets em with 2 miles on the odometer.

Hey thought I'd offer a few advanced tips for everybody going. Don't buy your gas in Baker! For the guys coming from the east, Vegas has the cheapest gas you'll probably see ever, Primm, Nv. is slightly closer to Dumont and still pretty reasonable. For the guys in Cali, Norco was $.50 a gallon cheaper than Baker. I made this mistake last time I went out there, had to pay $2.21 for 91 octane in Baker - and that was the cheapest station! On the way home I stopped in Norco and paid $1.71 for the same octane. Being the only major establishment out there I guess makes Baker a gas stop for everybody. Its too far from everything else to continue past.

There's only 4 outhouses for the whole area. Bring extra toilet paper in case they run out and realize that you might have to wait in line to take a dump. You can also make a nice in-camp toilet using a wood or metal frame with a toilet seat attached on top. Dig a nice deep hole, place the toilet over it, and make a privacy tent with some tarps to go around it - old trick from Burning man. A little kitty litter in the hole will keep the neighbors happy and you wont have to move the toilet after each time.

Baby wipes are life-savers! The dust out there cakes all over you and you'll feel filthy in minutes if its windy. A baby wipe bath will make you feel a whole lot better and also does a good job of removing grease, gas, and other nasties.

Bring EARPLUGS! As is always the case, some people like to get up early to ride and others like to stay up late partying. Simply bringing earplugs helps keep tempers down and ups the fun level.

Temperatures can range from above 100 to below freezing in a 24 hour period. Pack clothes to cover the whole range. A cheap windbreaker can make a huge difference when its windy and goggles that can be worn without a helmet will make windstorms easier to deal with.

I've got rolls of caution tape that I'll borrow from work to mark off our camp. A few tall stakes might be good if anyone can bring some. Also, placing plywood across the bottom of your vehicle on the side of the wind will make a good wind break on the other side of the truck.

Bring everything you think you might need. Tools, sewing kit, batteries, spare parts, tire repair kit, and a buttload of water comes first to mind. A gps comes in handy especially for night rides and returning back to that perfect bowl or trail you found, but its not very hard to find camp, unlike Glamis - even less so if we've got alot of motorhomes. There's nothing nearby for 40 miles, and even then its pretty hard to find something as basic as an auto parts store. If you realize you forgot something major like your sleeping bag, don't delay and stop in a major town to pick one up! Don't forget a good first aid kit - The nearest hospital is 55 miles away. My wife's a nursing student and I'm an ex lifeguard. We can help out in case something bad happens, but there's no known cure for stupidity. Seriously, this is one place you really don't want to have to be medivac'd from.

It is looking not soo good for Boon to make it. Time away from the family, and $$ wouldn't be feasible. I am still working on it though... Chetts, I have a 6x10 trailer. Rodney and Spoin, myself, you and your buddy Danny. That is 5 peeps. I don't think that would be good in a vehicle for the length of time that it would take to get there. You have a Duramax crew cab correct? If you want to drive, I may be able to land a 24' enclosed trailer. V-nose. We could use that to haul, and to sleep in if it is possible to get it. If not, I may be able to land a 24' car hauler. That is flat nose however, and wouldn't be good for fuel. I dunno. How could we work this. Possible take a fuel efficient car as a "chase" vehicle to haul the other peeps? Or, do we just pack in the cab, and go? Mapquest tells me it's 2700 miles from my house... I don't know what your truck gets for mileage, but I don't drive anything that gets over 10. I am thinking about rebuilding my tranny in the truck and getting the Overdrive back in it. That would help if I end up taking that.. I can probably come up with the $$ to go, but the wife will be hard to convince... And the little one as well. I don't know yet...

Don't give up BOON! I know some of the details are going to be kind of rough but we can make it! How many more times are we going to get a chance to go and meet this many people from our site? Hey, I just thought of something, I wonder how much it would cost to rent a U-haul (20ft) and then we could take a car so the quads could be inside and locked plus we could have the car in case of problems and so we would have more room. I'll call to find out.

anyone have a semi detailed map from San Diego to Dumont?

Im also still working on it, but I won't have a clue for sure untill last minute since you never know with college and all.

Is Dumont going to be too windy for tent camping? There is no possible way Ill be able to pull a trailer or anything, other than my little one that my bike fits on.

I just got off the phone to Budget and if we decided to rent a truck it would be cheaper to rent each way. Pick up near my house, drive there, drop off, pick up a different truck and come back. Don't know why that is but it's cheaper if this sounds like a good idea. I'm just trying to weigh our options, $2200 + taxes so around $2450. I think we would be better off driving our own and splitting gas, I told fixitrod I could unhook his speedo so the miles don't show. My trailer is 6'10" W and 12'6" long and handles 3500lbs. It's fairly new so it's no problem taking it plus it has 15" tires so it pulls good. Any more ideas boon, rod? I'll even spring for a bunch of stuff for food and snacks that we can take in a cooler so it doesn't cost so much.

Limited03, I'm close to TX, in Roswell New Mexico, and I'm going (well close to West Texas). Just found out I'm gonna miss the last two rounds of the local TT points series and an indoor TT in Hobbs <_< ...I'D RATHER BE IN DUMONT!

Was watching Huevos 6 and damn those dunes look sweet (it's entitled "Baker, CA"). In the commentary Wes talks about Dumont being his favorite...and the tallest dunes he's been to, second only to Nairobi... :o
