Lock out / Lock up clutch Q's

Recommended Posts

I would say for your riding and what not, the sling shot would be the hot ticket. To guys saying save your money and bla bla bla, have any of you looked at laeger's bike? It's kind o one of those no expense spared kind of builds. His chassis alone costs more then most bikes here.

I'd honestly say 70 hp is plenty enough to manipulate a lock up. People seem to think that the lock ups are just for drag bikes. But if you really look around, there are quite a few fellas using them to make bikes much more ridable. Yeah you could simply put a fresh HD springs in with a nice cable and lever, but if you really do ride all day really hard, it leaves a lot to be desired. That's where the lock up comes in. Super light springs let you have extremely minimal pull which is nice for reducing fatigue. The sling shot in your application gives you the same effect as a weighted flywheel which is sweet in trails. Keeps the momentum/inertia of the motor on tap which means you don't need to slip the clutch as much to get through the corners. Then if you get really in to it and start messing with different weights/materials, you can make the clutch come on how you desire. The baseline tune in the instructions is plenty fine for most trail guys, but it can be better if you like to mess with it. Get the trans cut and run the lock up. Couple that with the rest of the known shift mods and it'll be a drastic comparison. You will always hear guys stand up and say "I run a stock trans in my bla bla cub"..... Well, fuck that nonsense. There is better. If you look enough you will see some of those same guys have changed their mind and now run cut trannys. I wonder why they didn't put the stock trans back in?

OK, Green hooked me up with some great info on the Mattoon products.

Tricked, help me out some more with your thoughts on the sling shot idea.

The Gitgot website doesn't seem to offer a lot of info.

I have a stock cover that has been modified by Duncan with a quick access cover.

Will the sling shot lock up fit under my cover?

Who sells the sling shot version?

I like the idea of the reinforced cover and the looks too...

Trying to weigh all the options.

The price is about the same in the end. With the super low cost finger style units, they usually need a modified or aftermarket cover which can get pricy. I don't think there is enough room for the finger style lock up to work behind a Duncan cover. There should definitely be enough room for a sling shot though. I do not know if it's actually big enough to pull off the service cover of the sling shot that I run though. Mine is from Lane at Driveline. It's tits. The first season I had it I didn't mess with it much. I set it up according to the directions, and learned what it did to the bike in different situations. Then I started messing with the weights and making it slip for just the hole shot and that made a huge difference on race day. Then I started noticing it engine braking a bit less aggressive, the weight on the rotating mass (yep thackism) seemed to help the bike coming out of the apex of the turn. Couple that with the fact that it seemed to slip just a cunt hair out of the turn so I started using less clutch fanning. It made the bike retarted predictable. I'm sure a finger style could probably be tuned to work as well, but I kinda dig my driveline lock up. Newest venture this year has been different clutches and weights from McMaster Carr

Buy one^

Also, have CamATV cut your trans....
