question about too much timing.

Recommended Posts

I have a 10 cub ported by redline. .053 squish 171 compression on 110 race gas. Cam was telling me i could try it at +7 and take it for a spin to see how it reacts. At +5 now and it lacks a little. I did it up my street only to 3rd gear 3 times and noticed that it did pull harder. In fact it just blows the tires off. My question is can a motor have too much timing causing detonation and run better then a lower timing with out detnation? I dont hear any pinging and i just checked the plugs and dont see any metal flakes on them. Not looking to pop this motor. Anything else i can look for just to be safe. Thanks.

If detonation is involved......the end result is never better.

I have the same motor from the same builder on 110 (TONS of dyno time!)

+5 is conservative

+6 is safe

+7 is ragged edge and you better be spot on with jetting.

Gas motors shouldn't need alot of timing. If they do there is a combustion/dome shape issue or WAY TOO BIG of a pipe.

Well i dont think my jetting is spot on yet. Maybe i better go down to +6 to be safe. What jetting and setup you running. Im 55 168 on 39s with shearers and i have a delay before i hit the powerband when i stab the trottle on the road. When it hits it hits hard but it deffently has a pause. Is this jetting or just a cub?

Dam if i cant load it up on the road where can i. Ot sure as hell dont hook on the trails or hills.

Some of the street guys might have some tips to help you to deal with that. I know when I tried mine like that there was no hooking up with knobbies. ...but when I got to the sand I could tell better where my jetting was because I could load it more and get through a few more gears.

I dial mine in on the dyno and it's mint, but I'm running 41 mikuni's so my jetting info won't help you.

I think if it was me and the guy who built the motor said try 7 and see how it works it would be pretty damn safe to run it at 7. Just my thoughts

Oem cdi, stator,flywheel. Nology coil.

Same as me. But I run the RaceTech stators.

And NO you can't just run 7 degrees.

If your jetting is off you will be in solid detonationville.

You don't chase timing till you get jetting dialed in.

  • 3 weeks later...

Down here in Miami +7 is very concervative, I personally have mine 180 compression and +12 timing never had a problem and doesn't detonate. Just got to set up the bike right,

I have a stock cyl resleeved to 69mm on a stock strock long rod with sheerers vf2 on 110

What head and gasket are you using to keep 180 psi and 12 degrees sealed up on a 69mm stock cyl? I've done a few big bore combos in the past and finally got tired of it eating water and moved on. I tried copper coated VITOS, TDR copper gasket, TDR reinforced, girdle heads, etc. It was a shit show.
