dcalsv02
Since i didnt start a thread when i did my last build, i decided to start before i even made my decision on which route to go. I am about two to three weeks out from driving out to redline and getting parts. It seems I havent been successful at typing the correct key words or phrases into the search bar because i havent found the answer to which setup i should go for. I am about pull the trigger on one of two setups. a stock stroke serval from redline or a 4mill stock cyl dune port from redline. they both would be great setups for my Oregon dunes only (maybe St Anthony's or Glamis someday), riding style. It looks like they will be about the same cost to me and here is why..... Scenario #1 I already received a quote from redline (made my decision on company) for a stock stroke serval setup with and without porting. Down the road i would do a 4 mill crank, porting (if i dont this time around), and the pro mod trans when i split the cases. Do it all at once. Scenario #2 If i go with 4 mill ported stockers, I will have to split the cases. If I split the cases, I will do the pro mod at that time so i dont have to split the cases for a while after that. Down the road i would do the serval cylinders. It seems as though the prices and power ( I only want to run pump gas) are just about the same and you are only saving a few dollars going one way or another at different times in the build. Have i over thought this so much that i have not left out any details? Cant be.... I know i will have to set aside money for seals, jets, random shit etc...I gotta be over looking something right? i have 35 pwk's already. I know i will need manifolds (I currently have a 2-1 setup and just acquired the second carb). I have paul turner highs im going to run with for a while, as i have a set of shearers i can buy when im ready (i just dont want the lightswitch power for duning....do serval or dune ported cyls tame that?), i already have a magnum billet clutch with stiffer springs, shift star mod, easy shift spring mod, vforce 3's, cool head....Basically i feel like i have all the supporting mods already and have boiled it down to the above two scenarios as a next move. Here is a variable. I have two sets of cylinders. a set of mild ported, i say that because i dont know who ported them (upfront is etched in the side of a cylinder) or what kind of port. They may be on their last bore though. I also have a set of virgin cylinders on their first bore. I am going to take both cylinders to cam to have him check out the porting on one and have the virgin set ready to be ported if the already ported cyls are on the last bore. So i guess im looking for input more than anything right now. also if anyone has input on that shearer lightswitch question that would be cool, but im mostly looking for you smart guys' thoughts. Please ask any questions regarding my build to help specify advice given. Thanks in advance. Edited July 1, 2014 by dcalsv02
sheerider11
4 mil stock cylinder. Trans mod. Get the shearer if you want. I'm running Dune Ported stockers Vf2 4 mil 35 pwk CPI Love my bike. Has power everywhere. If I beat it like I hate it 5th can pull the front end up. I can trail ride the thing all day too. A little much but manageable. Pump gas too. Both scenarios have their positives. Im really stoked to possibly get the trans mod i have read so much about. The mono block as well...What type of riding do you do? sheerider11
I ride in sand pits in Nj. Usually sand trails and some hills to climb. Some wide open runs. I haven't missed a shift once. I went with stock cylinders for ease of convenience. If something happens it might be able to be bored.
dirtydownunder
4mm serval or 4mm stock cylinder. stock cylinder is your cheapest option as you already have the cylinders. so thats a 800$ (if ya dont get serval cylinders) saving already, (800 could be used for a 4mm crank and porting) shearers wil be fine, cpi would be better. i trail my shearers and have good time (not tight trails tho). cubs do wear the intake side of the piston, quite a bit, but people have ran em for years without a problem. tho as SR11 said, stock cylinder can be bored/sleeved ( ya need a decent problem to mess up the nikasil tho) pro mod is a must, big difference from a stocker and ya can beat the hell outa it. id go a 4mm serval tho, then its done and if you want more power you can port the serval cylinders. I appreciate the input a lot ddu. The 4 mill serval is not an option at this point and time. Its either gonna be a stock stroke serval (adding a 4 mill crank down the road and pro mod) or a 4 mill stock cyl with pro mod (adding serval cyls later)....Im just trying to identify all the pro's and con's for each scenario as well as any details i may have not considered....Please feed more info!! dirtydownunder
4mm ported stock cylinder for sure. to tell you the truth, if you have a ported 4mm stock cylinder then replace the stock cylinder with a stock 421 serval cylinder later, you would not be happy !. you would have to port the serval, to make it feel like a good difference. 4mm stock cylinder FTW !! dcalsv02
Thanks DDU, I have been thinking about these two scenarios quite a bit and i think im beginning to lean towards the stock cyl 4 mill....I can be persuaded the other way, but the trans mod AND porting AND 4 mill sounds like quite a change from my current setup. It will also depend on what type of port job my current cylinders are and if they still have some life left. If they are already ported pretty well i might decide to go the serval route. I only went on one ride this season so far and its just beginning. I didnt think i would tear my engine down this early in the season, but i think im gonna just do it and get this ball rolling. Im tired of paying for $10 a gallon race gas.
