Matt7373
Hey just picked up a Beat up Banshee and stripping it down to nothing for a complete rebuild. Everything has come apart great so far. Until the steering stem. Seems like the nut at the bottom of the stem just keeps spinning freely without catching any of the threads. Cottor pin is removed, shaft is not spinning but the nut just wont come off. Just spins and spins. Am I missing something ? ????
Starwriter
Sounds like the threads on the stem or in the nut are stripped. Try to get a screwdriver behind it and pry while spinning it. If that doesn't work, you need a "nut splitter". Either buy one or find an auto repair shop that has one.
sheerider11
Yup. A few threads. Cut that bitch and get a new stem.
Matt7373
Thanks guys. That's what I figured but wanted to make sure I wasn't trying to take it off incorrectly. Thanks
hoppedupandcutdown
Well you're no fun. You're not supposed to ask until after you have it all jacked up so we all can ridicule you. HaHaHa, welcome to BHQ
Matt7373
Haha thanks for the welcome. This Banshee needs lots of work. Complete front end including A arms. All bearings and seals. Previous owner did no maintnance at all. Missing hardware everywhere. Just have the steering stem and engine left to pull off. Then it will be stripped down to the frame. Fun lil project to keep me busy.
Starwriter
Once you get the stem out, and you pry out the seals, you need a special tool to get the bearing out. Here is the one I made. You need a 3/4" bolt which will have a 1 1/8" hex head. You can also jam 2 nuts together and use a 1 1/8" socket to turn it or you can use a pipe wrench on the 3/4" bolt. Here is the bolt kit that we all use. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Banshee-Polished-Stainless-Steel-ATV-Bolt-Kit-/300352177883?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45ee6286db&vxp=mtr
