Bogs + red hot right cylinder

Recommended Posts

So today I took my banshee out to go for a quick ride(Such nice weather) , started first kick as usual, everything was fine until I got it warmed up and gave it some gas, quad started bogging like it had fowled plugs so I proceeded to burn the plugs a little thinking that it just needed to be worn a little because its been sitting for a couple weeks, eventually it started to rev and sound normal so I threw it in gear went up the road really quick and it just bogged out a few times ran ok then ran horrible, when I pulled back in my drive way I check out the right cylinder and the exhaust was red hot almost on fire.. Im running 2:1 Carb set up with stock jets procirc pipes quad ran perfect for such a long time, Im not sure what is wrong but I could use some insight.

I havnt torn it down yet but I will be tomorrow, im wondering if its a broken reed or maybe to lean fuel some how all the sudden... Thanks in advance.

I would check the carbs. Clean them out since it's been sitting. Hopefully you didn't hurt the motor.

He's running a 2 into 1...

My money is on an air leak.

Could be anywhere in the entire system all the way down to crankshaft seals.

Do a compression test of both cylinders to see if you burnt the right cylinder, piston and/or rings.

Then do a proper leakdown test to find the leak.

Use a spray bottle with soapy water, pressurize the system, chase down the bubbles and report back.

Holy shit if you turned 1 pipe red hot you have serious issues! Compression check is going to be the first thing to do. Sounds like you had a air leak on the right cylinder and ran it way way way to lean and most likely burned up the piston on that side. 2 Strokes do not do well with that much heat!!

Could it also be the "PTO" crankshaft seal?

Would that only affect the right side of the motor or both sides?

Either way, perform the compression test with the throttle WFO.

Record your results of both cylinders and report back.

Then do a LD test to find the air leak.

It'll be interseting to see where this one goes.

Ok guys thank you for the help very much, but I found out the problem and it was really really stupid. I did a leakdown test everything was fine no leaks (I Also sprayed starter fluid around the engine while it was running nothing was wrong there.) so my next option was checking the spark plugs as i took them out i noticed one was br7 and one was bp7........ The guy who changed the plugs for me last used two different plugs..... the bp was in the left cylinder which was the red hot cy. put some new plugs in changed the oil filled it up and it runs absolutely fine now.. im glad it wasn't anything serious.

again thank you for the help everyone.

Just because you re-sleeved those cylinders not that long ago doesn't mean jack shit as to what the compression is now that you heated that cylinder up cherry red.

Take a step back, relax and grab a compression gauge and double check your compression. Nice catch on the spark plugs you may have gotten lucky on not melting it to the ground.

Do yourself a favor and have the piece of mind that your motor is running like it should.

He should run NGK BR8ES.

I run good ole B8ES' on my Banshee's.

The 87 calls for B8ES and the 02 calls for BR8ES.

Not sure why the difference, but the 02 runs great.

Not to thread jack, but I start a 3 day weekend at the dunes with a fresh set of plugs and I have to change plugs once over the weekend just to keep her crisp.

Any input why that might be guys?
