87twin350
Took the Banshee out over the weekend and found out what all the little things are that need to be looked at. Here they are: 1. Rear shock is pretty well shot. Needs a rebuild or replacement. 2. Thumb throttle is undoubtedly the hardest one I have ever encountered. Thumb fatigue was like 5 minutes into the ride. 3. Doesn't like to start when it's been running for 30 minutes or so. Not riding hard. 4. Hesitation in the mid range. 5. Need a vent tube for my gas cap. (Haha splashes in my face) I did learn however that whatever aftermarket headlights I have actually work quite well. So that's a major plus in my opinion. So my questions are, do I have to go with a whole aftermarket thumb throttle assembly to get it easier? My compression tests were at about 110psi in both cylinders, is this low for stock, and if it is, is that why it's a bitch to start when hot? When I'm riding and it feels like it's loading up, is that my needle placement? My rear shock, are they worth rebuilding? Thanks everyone! thomas h.
You need to do a leak down test be for fixing jetting. Then do a pilot jet test. Then your needle adjustments and main with plug chop test. I would delete tors and then test throttle also replace rear shock. Edited February 17, 2014 by thomas h. uman1030
↑ this do a leakdown, if your good figure out what jets you have installed chances are they arent the right ones depending on what mods have been done. ie pipes filters. stock compression depending on your altitude but at 0 asl is around 125-130 lessening as you go up in altitude. at 800ft asl mine was a little over 125 ish with a fresh rebuild on stock engine stock head. Thumb fatigue is definitely the first thing i noticed with these machines. it will go away as you ride more. They do sell extended thumb levers to make it less of an issue but your thumb will strengthen as you ride more. midrange hesitation would most likely be jetting/tuning related. you would have to list what jets and mods including what style filters you run to help pin point the probable cause. the hard starting issue is likely jetting also. Throttle being really hard could simply be a bad cable take the cable off first and make sure that it is nice and free. If you have the bike jetted too fat it will be hard to start warm and since you say it feels like it is loading up I am guessing you have to big of a main jet in the bike. You have any idea of what jets are in it?
87twin350
I guess I should have given you guys more of a background, my bad. I did a leak down check right when I got the quad and everything checked out okay. I bought it stock with the exception of a deleted air box and two uni foam filters on the carbs. I removed the TORS thinking the throttle may lighten up but it didn't do much. I also added Toomey T5's which is the reasoning for the jetting. I go to Gordon's Well which is just south of Glamis. Right now I am at 300 main jets, #2 clip setting on the needles and 25 pilot jets. I've already been told that I should go to 27.5 pilot jets, just been having trouble finding anywhere that has them in stock. The top end power was phenomenal; it screams as long as you don't let the rpm's drop too much before you shift.
Larry's Shee
27.5 P, 2 1/2 turns on screw, clip in middle, plug read/chop. MIGHT be little lean on main.
Colby
110 psi @ close to sea level? time for a top-end rebuild
Strm Trpr
Did you remove the carbs, take them apart and give them a good cleaning w/carb cleaner and blow every orifice out with compressed air. When I did my TORS delete, I put the slides in and adjusted the idle screws to just lift the slides up 0.5-1mm, visually. With the slides in the correct carb you should see the little dimple in the sight glass. With the new cable installed use the cable adjusters on the carb caps to make sure the slides lift off at exactly the same time when you blip the thumb throttle. Put the needle clip in the middle groove, 27.5 pilots in along with 300 mains and adjust the airscrews to 1.5 turns out from fully seated. I use a cheap eBay tach to dial in idle and the FAST carb sync tool to tune.
87twin350
I did do all of the above. I'm going to change my idle jets this week before my short weekend trip. I did decide that following this weekend trip, I'm going to pull off the top end and do a rebuild. I feel that I already know this answer, but I'm going to check to make sure. What's up with these WSM pistons? Are they anything better or comparable to Wiseco pistons?

turbowrenchhead
You can order the pilot jets directly from the dealer. I got the dealer parts number from a carb tuning write up on this site. If you have to rebuild the top end you might as well get the cylinders ported or buy a set already done. Big gains in porting.
