JasonsBanshee
Hey guys, quick question from a first time Cub owner. I’ve built bikes in the past, but they were all stock cylinder bikes. To ensure that I have no air pockets in the cylinder when filling the system up with coolant, you can crack open the bolts on the each side of the cylinders. Well, the cub cylinder doesn’t have these. I just completed my 421 Cub motor and plan to fill the coolant this weekend. It looks like my only option is to fill it up from the radiator and top off the over flow bottle and run it. Of course I’ll check the level once I run it some to make sure it’s still good to go. Also, I am going to get a ½ gallon (2 quart) bottle of Engine Ice. From what I’ve heard, this should be enough to fill the entire system. Thoughts? sheerider11
I've never gotten that involved. I've filled the rad, fired it, and topped it off. The over flow is just that. The system dosent pull from there if it gets low.

WINDYCITYJOHN400
Buy two containers of engine ice. (You run it straight and can't add water. So two fills you from empty and leaves you with some for topping off.) Fill system till it hits the very top of the radiator core....them push any air out of system by squeezing the radiator hoses and pumping them like a heartbeat. Then top off radiator to about a 1/2" from the cap. Expect a little overflow after your first hard ride. I'd also HIGHLY RECOMMEND you take the opportunity to install a water temp gauge at this time. TTO and KOSO both make a nice unit that runs for over a year on a simple watch battery. The sensor mounts in the radiator hose comming off the head and sends accurate readings of how hot things are right to a handlebar mounted display. dave5.0
The over flow is just that. The system dosent pull from there if it gets low. Huh? If it gets warm expands the fluid and spits it into the overflow and its hooked up correctly I'm sure it'll suck some back in as it cools down? Like a car? Same system. Just smaller. Can you give me more info on the handlebar mounted units? I saw some KOSO gauges on ebay. It looks like I need the gauge and the inline adapter. I didn’t see anything about a handlebar mount. Coupelx
Dave is correct but it doesnt work all that well. I just fill it start it and top off. I dont run an overflow tank so it spits a bit out until its happy. Profit.

I made a flat metal bracket that mounts with the steering stem bolts. They just Velcro on. They hold up to all the abuses. Mine is a KOSO and is big and easy to read. dirtydownunder
never thought it was a problem. throw water in, run the bike with the cap off, get it hot , top it off and put the cap on, go for a ride. and next day check rad level, top it off and forget about it.
