Undercut Gears

I read in a Tony Doukas catalog a mod called undercutting gears. I am going to call tomorrow and figure out what it is. I was just wondering if anyone has experience with it and maybe knows what it is.

I think what they may mean is what I recommend on my site. Besides cutting off every other dog/bridge you can also "back cut" the bridges and dogs so they are angled. So that when the gears mesh the angle is actually draw them together tighter. I do know from past experiences that too much of an angle can cause shifting problems

B370 hit it pretty much on the head. In a manual transmission, the "gears" are actually meshed all the time. What you do is slide a collar which is splined to the output shaft along the output shaft to engage the specific gear. The collars have dogs or teeth that engage with the gear. Undercutting is what is done to the dogs and the mating part of the gear to help keep them locked together. If they are under cut to much they can lock and cause poor shifting and or break off. See this link at how stuff works for a better description of how manual transmissions work: Manual transmissions

I see, thanks.

I think I will ship off the tranny to TDR for cutting of it and the shift star.

Raxen:

Can you post a price and description of what TDR does? I'm sure others would like to know also. I'm curious to see if they are cutting the tranny like its listed on my site or just undercutting/backcutting, and what they would charge for something like that.

Thanks
