trickedcarbine
Gotcha Cam. I just ran this motor on my bench through the gears with a stock shaft and a modded one. Totally gotcha. Had the cases split to really see the shift drum in motion so it is pretty clear.
rubberneck
There you go, when you watch what is going on inside with both modified and unmodified components, it becomes pretty clear, that was the point i was trying to make to possum earlier. For anybody still not understanding i will give a hint. With a stock shaft when you move the shifter you are "asking" the bike to shift. With a modified shaft you are "demanding" that it shift. The modded star just makes the process feel smoother. And i will further agree with what has been posted as far as the external mods are worth doing even without the internal mods. If im not splitting the cases i still do the shaft and star mod and it certainly helps. However on all my personal bikes i cut the trans and do a few other tweaks. It just makes a world of difference and i feel its worth the time. Now of course having a properly adjusted clutch with good basket, hub and pressure plate is absolutely necessary as well. camatv
all very true.. i guess then i may be a lil too demanding of these transmissions. for some just a modified star and shift shaft will suffice. for me personally its just not enough... i mean i just bought this complicated rotating head tool grinder to do the gears on the overrides i'm going to be doing. from what i have seen most are done by hand i feel and after a while cause problems. problems that i want to avoid.. and seeing whats going on with both shafts available does make it very obvious why its needed. not just the star modification. if i was doing only one i would do the shift shaft. hey at least you were willing to take the time to check it out and not just bash me..
trickedcarbine
Right. I get how the whole tranny functions but I still feel that every time one is in my hand I can think of a way for something on it to be better. Then I see an over ride or something that confirms it. Cam, do you think it's worth while to do any drum work on a stock cut tranny other then the bearing? I'm referring to possible chamfering on some areas and welding and machining others for better drum action or is that just over ride stuff? camatv
overrides need welded and redone stuff to make them work they are actually in 2 gears at the same time... modded needs no changes to the chifting actions of the drums now of course i get some in here that are damaged and need fixed or replaced.. the ramps are jacked up from a jam. im really considering a complete billet type drum to replace existing rewelds. my theories on the trans i have a ton of idears on the actual shift shaft changes, involving ratchet pawl changes, reinforcement chages etcetc some main shaft changes involving bearings ( like ktm) and some other tings involving heat treating recut parts.. but i dont want to go into detail's
