camatv
after you screw with "peaky" high strung limited powerbands you might realize that a broader power is much more fun and faster to ride. the more predictable the bike is ( in smaller cc set up) the faster it will be. i realizes this a long long time ago and started down the path of rideable HP. its kinda funky to get it right. but a lot of cylinder work on stockers and its doable. run alky also screw race fuel unless you are in some class that specs it only. drag bikes run alky just easy as that. now that said there are a few out there that refuse to go down the alky road and dont mind spending 18 bucks a gallon on some way exotic nearly alky blend of fuel and nitro and other substances but hey. good ole pure alky is easy to run easy on the pocketbook and makes a lot of hp. i ran a "drag" port 350 on a fmf'd bike with alky 38mm lectrons and a 6 over arm at the dunes here. trail rode , drag raced, dunned, and had a lot of fun on it ( untill the so called duneable let go)
RagunCajun
The only thing that stops me from putting my bike on alky is purging with gas before you pick it up. No thanks.
sprinklerman
Purging takes all of 5 minutes. I also agree with whst cam said about peaky power. ..which is what you will get going a drag port and pump gas...compared to race gas and a drag port. IMO, you are better going to a broad style power delivery if you must keep pump gas. Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
dozer
I used to think purging would be a big pain also but like sprinklerman said it can be done in 5 minutes easily. alky is cheap but you basically burn twice as much. even figuring in how much extra you burn its way cheaper than other race fuels. the power gains are awesome and the bike will run great even if the tune isn't perfect. RagunCajun
I may look into it if its not that time consuming. Any links handy so I can read up?
sprinklerman
I just use my old factory coolant bottle and a factory tee fitting . A little pump gas @ 20:1 in it and let the bike suck it dry. Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
Young Guns Racing
If i move to straight 110 or 112 octane race fuel wouldnt i be able to get a broad power band with a drag port? or are we still talking peaky power here? Im ok with the cost of race fuel...yeah it sucks but im not ready to switch to alky yet. That will be a road i am sure I will go down later on. If the power will be too "peaky" with a drag port and not really net me any gains, then I will just take the setup I have and throw on some race fuel custom cut domes and an override and be content. sprinklerman
It would be good to have your builder look at the cyls and tell you how much more there is to be had power wise without getting too peaky. sprinklerman
But a drag port on race gas can have a fairly broad powerband. Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
RagunCajun
^ Due ONLY to more compression and timing?
dozer
^ Due ONLY to more compression and timing? imo yes due to more compression and timing.
sprinklerman
And more aggressive head design in general. Sent from my SCH-R970 using Tapatalk
dozer
^ Due ONLY to more compression and timing? you have head design, port shape, port angle, port volume, squish and all the other details a builder can customize. a complete setup from a builder will gain as a package and produce more power but if your only gona swap to race gas and raise compression/ timing and not totally redo the engine for the specific fuel then gains can be very noticeable from timing and compression. oldskool
The override tranny will not like playing in the field, unless your just doing straight runs. Its not good for on/off/on/off throttle. Perfect for drag racing.
possum
drag port is always pipey. even on race gas or alky. It can "help" pick up the bottom end and roll on with timing, compression, domes etc... But dont expect it to be "broad" (Note) there is one builder i know that can truly get broad power with a drag port. Im not sure about Redline. So ask him.
