I just installed some toomey t5s and fmf silencers. When I had the carbs apart I noticed they were ported and that my main jet was already 270. The only mods the bike had was the air snorkle was removed. I bought this bike used and I am not sure what jet size to put in for the toomeys because I am not certain the carbs are stock. I put in 290s for now but im not sure if that will be sufficent. My friend rode it and told me he thought it was pinging from 3/4 throttle up.

Would my quad run if the jet size was 270 and all I had was the snorkle removed with the stock carbs?

Also how can I tell if I have stock carbs or not?

Maybe the motor has internal work done to it...I'd start w/ 330 mains and do a wot test in 6th gear for 5-10 seconds. PUll the plugs and see what they look like..

I just did a wot 1-6 gear run. And then pulled the plugs and rode home on my old ones. One plug is a chocolate brown throughout the entire white procelain part. The other plug is white throughout the whole porcelain part. My carb tob on that carb was a little bit loose so hopefully thats all it was.

a loose carb top will do that and make the motor really lean. Tighten it up and do another run....What size jets are you testing w/?

I was testing it with the 290 mains. I still dont get why it had 270 mains when I pulled the carbs. I am thinking maybe it had aftermarket pipes on it before it was sold to me and then the pipes were removed and the carbs were never rejetted.

The only mods that I know of are ported carbs, removed snorkel, and toomey t5s with fmf silencers. Quite possibly aftermarket carbs but I'm not sure.

That would be about right for jetting. I was thinking that you had the lid removed. You might want to think about cutting the end of the lid or keep it off if you have the K and N w/ the flange....You'll gain another four hp and better throttle response..You'll probably have to go up another two to three sizes on the mains...

If the carbs were aftermarket they would flow more fuel correct?  With the 290 jet size and my mods it would bog really bad right (if the carbs weren't stock)?

yes, larger carbs will make it sluggish, but so won't leaving the air box cover on....also if you already had larger main jets, then you might have larger pilots to... maybe they are too big....that'll make a big difference on the lower rpms and throttle response.....have you tried adjusting the air screws yet?? Adjust them to throttle response....also the size jets your running are about right for stock carbs and also means that your running mikunis....

Yea the bike is running alright. I was just trying to determine if my carbs were stock or not. I have come to the conclusion that they are stock ported carbs. I did not notice a huge difference in performance after the pipes were put on. I think that maybe I was expecting too much from them. Or maybe it is because my intake sysytem is still basically stock.

What do you mean "not much difference"!!! Did you have stock pipes on there before??? Or another set of aftermarket pipes???? You should notice huge gains from stock pipes.....sounds to me between the jetting, etc.. that you already had aftermarket pipes on it....

I had stock pipes on before. Granted I have not ridden it much since the pipes were put on and my tires are really bald and worn out. Maybe I am just spinning the tires too much and not hooking up.

I just removed the airbox lid completely just to see what would happen. All I can say is damn what a difference! I could not keep the front end down. A little 2 stroke oil was coming out my pipes before I removed the lid so this lead me to believe I was running too rich.

My bike runs perfect now, I just want to make sure that I am not running too lean now. What do you guys think? I have a 290 main jet with the following mods: airbox lid removed, toomey t5s and fmf silencers, ported carbs and thats it.

Yea I fixed the carb leak on that side, bought new plugs then did another 1-6 wot run. Plugs were both brown this time :) But it still didnt feel like it was running right so I removed the airbox lid and now it runs like a bat outta hell. :D

Go up a couple more sizes and do another wot run.....Guaranteed your running too lean now.....Its not that your jetting was too rich before as much as your motor just couldn't get enough air to run those pipes properly.....
