3wheeledfanatic
This is my first post on the forum just wanted to say thanks i have been reading over the forums for awhile. I am new to banshees, my brother recently gave me his old banshee. I recently went through the entire motor and have started to clean it up. My banshee is a 1987 which was completely stock until I got it. My problem is that the bike runs hard through all gears until I hit 6th then falls out of the pipe and very very slowly gains speed. I am just wondering what you guys think it could be. Is it normal to not pull hard in 6th? It does have huge 22. 10 9 carlisle strikers on the back which is a really heavy tire if that helps any. I will list my mods Stock Crank- not welded but had very low hours and i didnt even know welding was neccessary til i already had the motor together. Stock bore with wiseco pro lite pistons 125 psi on both cylinders Stock air box no lid with stock air filter bolted to box. Aftermarket pipes- unknown brand but they are sectional coned pipes with stock silencers. Stock carbs- synced with 25 pilots 300 mains at 750ft elevation MO 80 degree weather. New tusk clutch kit with heavy duty springs. Motor has 5 hours on it. All gaskets and seals were replaced. Thanks ahead for the help. J-Madd
If its stock gearing its too high for those tires, IMO. Even if it had to '87 gearing, which I believe is lower, but I could be wrong.
3wheeledfanatic
I'm fairly sure it's stock gearing. My brother bought it new and didn't do anything to it but let it sit. ill check tonight.any other ideas? 3wheeledfanatic
The banshee has a 13 up front and a 40 in the rear, from what i have read 42 is the stock sprocket size. Wouldnt this cause my gearing issue?
Strm Trpr
Stock banshee gearing is 14/41.
J-Madd
13/42 or 14/45 would get you closer to the stock ratio with those tires.
kedge82
your main jet is way high for what you have mine i bored 60 over with fmf sst pipes and silencers carbon fiber reeds wisco crank after market box with k&n air filters @ 850 elevation and i run a 270! you should be below that i would start at 250 work down from there maybe 260 to be safe but 300 on mine runs like straight poop with more work done and basiclly same temp n alttitude
3wheeledfanatic
I will get some jets today and try that also. I am always worried im jetting lean so i go high.
360CICJ
Start rich and work your way down, a motor running rich will "load up" the cylinders and will cause the effect you're having. Welcome to banshees and good luck with your tuning!
Pasi S.
Like J-madd said above, different gearing may help. My bike liked 13-42 with 22x11-9 Maxxis Razr 2 rear tires. Thay are also heavy 6ply tires.

Stock stroke, pipes, open air box. OP, before you start throwing jets at it, do a plug chop. Did you do a leak down test after rebuild? I would NOT drop from a 300 to a 250 in one setting! Plug chop it and if it shows rich drop 1-2 jet sizes and chop again.
3wheeledfanatic
My new sprocket came in today, I will put it on tomorrow night and update. Joey83- Yes it passed a leak down test, My plugs are dark chocolate but dry after riding around I will do a plug chop tomorrow night
3wheeledfanatic
The sprocket helped get to the powerband in the other gears but still bogs in 6th. I have some 280 mains, would that be too big of a drop? It is getting cooler here and I know that will affect my jetting.
J-Madd
What sprocket did you go with?
