Motor Break In......

Recommended Posts

Need some input on break in prcedures and fuel mixture to use..

Finished the 4mil with dune/play port cylinders. Was going to start it tonight but wanted to check manual on what oil ratio to use. I run only Bel Ray synthetic. I went bigger on the main jets and raised the needle. I looked in the manual and they say 16:1 for a couple heat cycles. After that run normal. Went on yahoo search and found that some run heat cycles and use same oil ratio. A little run down of whats done....

T5's

Keihin 35mm's

had 158 mains switched to 170's

Raised needle two notches

4mm Hot Rods crank

Cast pistons

dune play port

NOSS head w/ cut domes for 4mm 93 octane 1200 foot elevation

Squish I believe was somewhere .048-.045.. didn't check compression though

Stock timing plate modded to about 5 degrees...

Can't wait to kick her over

Boyesen reeds

Lots of trans work done.... cut dogs, shift drum bearings, shift pro, modded star, bearings on shift shaft,

I was told to let it warm up, then ride it around about 15 minutes, making sure to vary the throttle position alot..making sure u got into all the rpm ranges at least a little.. Let it cool, check torque on engine bolts, then do that procedure again minus retorqing bolts.. Run an easy about 1/2 tank of gas through it, then ride it like you stole it.. Also, use whatever ratio you plan to always use in it.

That oil ratio is WAY heavy unless your planning on running Yamaha oil.  If your running a decent synthetic......back it off to 40:1.  That's where I run my motor and a few guys here will run quality synthetics up to 50:1.  You will find the average on the site is that people will run 32:1 and have had zero problems.  So 16:1 is WAY WAY WAY too much oil.

I agree 16:1 is way to much. 32:1 is perfect I would recommend Yamalube 2R.

You should always let the motor warm up even after broken in. Start with a fresh batch of Gas and Oil. Let it warm up for a couple of minutes. Once warmed up to about 160 to 170. I take it out for a spin a couple of minutes at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. Once your done , then its when it gets FUN and you WOT. I have done 4 of my setups this way and I haven't had any problems. The main thing is that everything is in within tolerance.

I have always mixed 40.1 and like stated ill let it idle for a bit check fluid and few good slow trips up down the road then give her hell and listen and keep checking for leaked loose bolts .. My bet is 45 cel middle or up one and 158 main

When seating the rings you want to rev cleanly thru several gears then engine brake, decel in each gear back to say 2nd, then back up thru the gears and then decel back down thru the gears.

This will ensure the ring shavings don't crap up the ring lands and seat the rings with optimum compression.

Let it cool down check torque specs on the cyls and head.

Then repeat going thru the gears again.

Then you should be good to go.
