New guy + Banshee restore

Yall have a good looking forum here so figured I'd introduce myself and share one of my current projects. Have rode everything with a motor on it for as long as I can remember but then got married....... Then kids....... So between all of that and buying our first couple houses/moving my poor machine has been inside, outside, stood up, and everything else besides being ridden.

 

I'm basically going to tear it all apart, powder coat somethings, possibly new A arms, and a couple other things along the way. Honestly I don't really have a final outlook as far as what my main goal is going to be i.e. dune rider/trail rider so I'm kind of winging it for now. But I'd like an all around machine that is decent at all and not necessarily great at one thing, minus being fast.....

 

So here is what I'm starting out with. I don't have a ton of time to work on it but it will be my little project for after the wife/kids go to bed so please be patient.

 

And MOST IMPORTANT, I haven't been up to speed with motorsports in quite awhile so any and all suggestions are more than welcome.

Take it down to the frame, start fresh. New bearings, seals, hoses, cables, lines, gaskets, anything that's not a hard part. If your really gonna do it,follow through 110% don't be cheap.

If you think you might need it, get it. Ask question, but be smart. Get a clymers, do some research on what you may want to do.

id deff do a complete rebuild if you have the money who knows how much rust might be on the crank and cylinders. if you have about 1k id do every bearin in the motor new topend ect do it right now so you dont have to do it again in a week.

Yea I agree with these guys, start with your engine and frame first, don't even worry about the cosmetic stuff like your seat or plastics, that can all be repaired or replaced for cheap, do the expensive shit first and get it out of the way, and for gods sakes get a TORS delete kit, you'll thank me later once it's installed

Sheerider/Cory - That's the plan so far. I've never pulled a Banshee engine personally but used to do pretty good work to my bikes so can't be THAT much different right?.......

 

Soldier, I don't care about the aesthetics and won't for awhile. Absolute worst case ill throw the old plastics on and who needs to sit down anyways huh?

 

As always I start a new project and try to work around other things. Pulled the plastics off today and realized the garage was a cluster f*** so Ill be cleaning tomorrow to try and stay organized. For at least a day or two anyways.

its CLOSE to being easy to work on.  Bikes are actually harder in my eyes because bike cases separate side to side and the banshee cases separate from top/bottom.  However when you go to separate them MAKE SURE you don't just start beating the cases apart as there is a bearing retainer that looks like a half moon that connects the top case and bottom case.

 

Other than that these are some of the easiest bikes to wrench on. 

 

Just some of the harder bikes to tune....hahaha....

 

But if you have half a sense of what a wrench is and a clymers manual....you'll do fine.  Also do some SERIOUS reading on the website here and you'll learn a lot.  There are some of us who give great advise......until you ignore our warnings......then you're all out on your own hahaha.

Buff your plastics and call Vegas Jeff for a seat cover to top it all off when you're done. It's kinda like the icing on the cake. A reward for turning a turd in to gold.

 

Look in the for sale section here for stuff that is used but still in great shape. Best way to save a buck.

Per norm I got antsy and cleaning got put off and I started tearing at things apart. My biggest worry is going to be electrical. Not planning on much so should just be unplug/plug but I'm sure it won't be that easy.
