Rear Axle Jam Nut Loose

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, new to the site here! And a new owner of an 2008 Banshee, wil be uploading pictures.

After the first ride in the dunes, I noticed the Jam nut on the rear axle is loose, I can movie it with my hand about an inch in either direction, but no further, the other nut to the right of the Jam nut is still tight. And from what I can see, my axle bearings are fine. My qusetion is, what direction do I tighten the Jam nut, and should I loosen the nut off an apply lock tight? (a little mechanically declined here, so bare with me)

ALso, does anyone here have a link to a free service/repair manual I could download? If not I will definetly be picking one up from my local dealer.

Thanks

its called a lock nut and you tighten it against the inner nut to stop it coming loose, honestly if your inner nut isn`t loose right now someone could well have already used locktite on it.

if the inner nut starts turning when you are tightning the lock nut you have to hold it to stop that, do it with the back end of your bike off the ground, make sure your axle still spin free while doing all this.

What you want to do is LOCK them together so they will not come apart on their own.

1. Torque the first nut to 40ft-lbs.

2. Torque the second nut onto the first nut to 140ft-lbs.

3. Make a straight line with a marker across both nuts.

4. Back the first nut off into the second nut to 170ft-lbs.

5. Measure the distance between the two marks, if not about 1/8", repeat the process.

This will LOCK the nuts together, don't just tighten them down and hope for the best. The bearings will bind and eventually fuck up.

No loctite is needed whatsoever.

I love how some of these guys tell you how to do half a job, there's a special tool you need that you goes on the nuts an the clip te tool to a torque wrench, follow savage 420's info but you need that key, if you have the old school round axle lock nuts than I'm not sure, grab a pipe wrench and a pry bar and have at er
