alky question

Recommended Posts

421 cub drag ported by k&t, 40 lectrons +7 timming, hv fuel pump.

This is not a plug chop yet but just heat cycles then had some problems with needle and seat. Got it all worked out, put new br9es in, cranked, ran it on and off for few minutes at a time, along with fatening the needles up and this is what I have and it scares the shit out of me. The motor at first crank tried to run away at times while adjusting idle and eventually reved high as shit and I attempted to kill it but it never happened so I pulled the plug caps off and it finally died. What's yall take on this and should I pull the top end to inspect.

way too rich. alky plug should still look brand new after just a few pulls. there isnt even a temp reading on the ring. you don't do "plug chops" on alky. everything you need to know is on top. color band on the ground strap and color band on the flat area where the threads start.

I think he's saying he didn't even ride it. Just fired it up. I've never seen heat on straps and porcelain of plugs from running in neutral, but if you had a lean hang, thats what heated it up. I'm surprised that pulling the plug wires killed it. It must have been strictly due to the carbs being open and not actual dieselling. When they diesel, the best way to kill the motor is the pull the kill switch (duh), then hold the throttle WOT.  I'd bet the motor is fine.

The carbon on on there is from purging a bit before I put it up.

Right, I never rode it just ran in neutral, I don't even have the chain on yet. Wish I would have, I could have dumped the clutch and held the brake to kill it. Man, that was scary as hell!

I'll put new plugs in tomorrow and run again and report back, I still may pull the head off just to see.

why are you even messing with the jetting without a chain on it where it can be ridden? you will never get the jetting right without a load on the engine..... plus it is (and im sorry if this offends you) stupid to fire a new setup without a way of being able to stop a runaway from a lean condition. chain, brakes, etc

X2 on not running without a chain. one time i ead running my jetski on the hose at the house. accidently put some 20%nitro alky mix in it. it ran away and i pulled wires but it kept running. had to smother it. motor was toast. what are your needles at

Lectrons needles are set with no load on motor. And a single purge cycle won usually put much on the plugs, and alky won't ever put carbon on the plugs. Black shit with alky is heat.

not that i would argue with someone with clearly more experience than me, but humor me. when you tune lectrons with no load...... do you not have to tune once at the track with real world elements? ie load, engine temp etc? yes you can tune any motor on a non loaded setup and get it right, but as soon as it is introduced to real world elements it is not even close. even going from a dyno to real world it will need more fuel, less timing no?

either way i would still never fire a bike that didn't have a chain and brakes. you're asking for trouble.

Finch is right to a point. if you have the proper needle (which the pe-1 is) then when you set idle jetting correctly your mid will be right. I saw that j-madd had mentioned in another post to set the needle by lowering it until the idle just starts to get gamey.start around 48.5mm or so. this is what ive done for years and it works good. if you are rich on bottom it will be smokey, and boggy of idle. the pj you need to set under load. start wide open and lean down.

I was thinking that since Lectron set my carbs up to my motor that I could just find a happy medium then throw the chain on and tune from there. Never thought that it would get away from me like that. Bad decision, I know, was just hoping to get a good idle and throttle respnse before I put a load on it.
