This sucks...

I think its safe to say that since you avoided my questions, you didn't confirm compression or perform a leak down after assembly

Heres a pic of my motor, first trip to glamis stator side air leak = BOOOOOOM

Was this before you knew what the fuck you were doing? I'm sure it was :)

it actually seems to have the APPEARANCE of a lean condition.....but I don't think a lean condition would have caused the center of that piston to break free.  The spark plug backing out is also a KNOWN sign of detonation.  By him continuing to ride the bike after the plug backing out (while running less than 96 octane fuel) would surely void any warranty that even Athena would offer.  You cant be responsible for someone NOT running what is recommended.

That's like someone telling you not to stick your dick in a hole cause it'll get cut off and you do anyways....then him trying to sue you.

Don't let him try to blame you.

I agree with you.

But if i took it to a mechanic that "assumed" the jetting was ok since i already had a "big bore " and didn't perform a squish test or compression test,or leakdown test (before and after). i guess id have it coming.  There aren't any warranties in performance applications...especially when things are done that way.

This was the result of some back yard meat head engine builder from Brooklyn NY building my first 4mil before i went out to glamis for the first time-doubling up on base gaskets not checking his work and than bing bang boom- 2nd day into my dream dune trip and i was like fuck this- went to the dealership in town and bought a brand new 450 off the show room floor and in 2hrs it was delivered to gecko road- Aint no body got time for these wanna be engine builders that fuck shit up and wont stand behind there work.. Live and ya learn I guess

PS the engine builder comment is aimed directly at the moron I delt with not to the person who started this thread!!

A "Shop" should know enough about engines to at the very least advise him to run some WAY bigger jets. That way it goes out the door jetted fat and protects the product from an under educated owner. (That's your insurance as a business)

The fact that one side burned down that badly indicates that there might have been an air leak on that side of the motor. If all you did was slap a new top end on his lower half without doing any inspections, then that's not engine building. It's just assembly......Well regardless of what you were asked to do, it's at the very least Not Professional.

When you say "It ran great" do you mean it idled great? Do you have a test track or area you are able to dial in machines? It doesn't sound like you did anything other than assemble a top end. Tuning was left completely to the customer. Now I'll admit that it is the responsibility of the owner of a machine to keep it in tune correctly, but if someone is paying you to put a top end on, clearly they don't have any mechanical ability so they really should have had their hand held a little more.

If you put this top end on....what was the final piston to cylinder wall clearance? Did you just figure it's a kit, so everything must be fine? What was the compression? Squish? Did you check the condition of the crank? Were cases split? Did you clean the carbs so you knew the jets were not clogged?

More to the point.....since you charged like a pro...did you do pro work? I mean you don't even know what the timing was set at! Your not really sounding like a builder with knowledge about motors. Your sounding like a guy who cleans mower carbs, changes spark plugs and swaps parts.

Everyone is going to be paying for their education on this one.

Your going to be learning not to take on projects that are above your pay grade. Your customer is going to be learning that if he doesn't know shit about performance motors, then he better find a shop with a owner who can teach him.

Guess what we would be telling your customer if he came on this site, posted those pics and told us about the build you did for him. We would ask just what his "Builder" did.........then we would be telling him to find a real builder.

Ya... Ok I'm gonna make this clear...

-The guy who owned it was in way over his head..

-I was in over my head! I've rebuilt dirt bikes, but nothing like this..

-the quad Was jetted correctly, it idled perfect, started first kick, revved out smooth, and all around ran great and showed no signs of being lean.

-no the shop is not a performance atv shop, but not a hack mower shop either, during the winter (hunting season>_> in the south) 98% of our work is atv, besides the boss buys, rebuilds, and sells dirt bikes, sport quads, and motorcycles. - now I'm not saying we didn't screw up on this, but I'm pretty sure that it was not my problem on this deal.

- I don't think the same thing that popped it this time popped it last time, - 1- it was the other piston this time.

2- totally different symptoms.

3- he admitted to not having a clue how to mix fuel correctly

-there's no danger of lawsuit..

Well i guess I learned a lot by the whole deal...

Thanks for ya'lls wisdom..
