hunt3rm008
so first off i did a topend rebuild and once i started it up, it smoked a lot and burned oil. so i split the cases and replaced all the seals. one of the crank seals was the problem because it was damaged. so i thought this would correct the problem but i guess it didnt. after putting the new seals in and starting it up, it smokes a little bit, barely so i think its okay. but the compression is only at 100psi. and my elevation is 470ft. also when i try to start it, sometimes it will start first kick, then another time it could take over 30 kicks. another thing is after replacing the seals, i reused the metal head gasket. could that be my problem? could reusing that cause the problems i am having? i would appreciate any advice or info, thanks everyone
hunt3rm008
when i do a cold start it will usually start up and run. then if i drive it for a few mins then shut it off. it wont start back up. i have to wait a little while.
sheerider11
What was involved in this top end rebuild?
hunt3rm008
i sent my cylinders out to herr jugs racing and got the cylinder bored and honed to the next size and ports cleaned up, and kevin from herr jugs sent me back a top end rebuilt kid.
sheerider11
Okay. So you used all the new gaskets and all that good stuff. Good catch on the crank seal. Now did you use yamabond or equivalent to re-seal the cases? You went across the back of the crank connecting the 2 sides? The plugs on the bottom of the cylinders aren't leaking? Were you able to tell if it was coolant or oil?
sheerider11
You know what, I just re read that and saw you fixed the smoke problem. Now your problem is the low compression.
hunt3rm008
i did use equivalent to re seal the cases and yes i went across the back of the crank, i watched jlsparky7's videos on youtube. he has many banshee videos. and what do you mean by the plugs on the bottom of the cylinders? nothing is leaking on the cylinders. hunt3rm008
yes the smoke problem is fine now, just the low compression, and starting problem. it starts up cold fine, then i ride it for a few minutes and shut it off. and immediately after that it will not start up. until about 30mins later. sheerider11
I'm talking about the rubber coolant jacket plug. I was still talking about the smoking issue, but it seems you tool care of it.
hunt3rm008
any ideas on the starting issue? it still wont start right now i just tried. and when i give it a little bit of gas while kicking it over, it sounds boggy.
sheerider11
What size base gasket did you use? Did Kevin recommend a new jetting? Did you do a leak down test?
hunt3rm008
do you mean the jug gasket? and no he did not and no i did not do a leak down test.
sheerider11
Do a leak down test. Yeah the jug gasket. Is your compression tester up to par? I can understand having to kick the hell out of it with 100 psi. But you say sometimes it'll fire fist kick cold. Then once it warms up it gets difficult. To me that sounds like an electrical issue. If you can, do a leak down test. Double check your compression readings agains another tester.
sheerider1026
Yep.. I have had a few testers give bogus readings..
