Engine Rebuild Pics 4 years old, what is this black gunk?

Recommended Posts

try scraping some off the reed stops. If it flakes off like paint would chances are its paint. It could also be the gasket sealer they used when putting the intake gaskets on and got a little generous? Get some dual stage reeds when you throw that thing back together and ditch those reed stops. Your throttle response gains will be enormous.

how much are good reeds? Or do I just need reed stops? How much?

It does appear to be paint, yamaha seems to have used white gasket sealer (Lithium grease?) What will I need for sealer when I put it back togther?

The oil I have been using is YamaLube, mixed just a little over 32 to 1.

I guess I could have just put in new rings and pistons. But porting will be much better anyways.

good reeds will run you about 40 bucks. Well worth the money. You could use yamabond if you want to attach the gaskets to the jugs. I dont know what others use if anything at all, but I would think it would be something to use. Mine were pretty stuck to my jugs, figured they used a sealer of some sort.

Get some boyeson dual stage reeds. I prefer them over the carbon fibers. Dont think they flex enough and if you happen to break one they arent going to burn up in your cylinders as easily as a regular reed.

Doesn"t that guys arm get tired? Get some TDR .018 and port the cages. They are about $33 shipped. Keep the stops. They will keep the peddles from fluttering and then cracking. A couple of little dings in the head won't hurt performance. Can you smooth them out? I have seen some heads that looked like a little kid with a new hammer was practicing on the squish band. :o:blink:
