hoppedupandcutdown
Can you use self etching primer on plastics says it's safe for fiberglass You can, no sense in it. 2 part urethane primer would be best, it sticks to everything. I'm not a fan of painting plastic for woods/trail riding, sooner or later it will scratch off.
possum
I wouldnt use the primer. Primer tends to build to much and cause cracking later on. Use automotive urethane paints preferably base coat/clearcoat. Bulldog for adhesion promoter.
hoppedupandcutdown
Agreed, don't prime if you don't need too. Although I only urethane cleared a set of Fullbores for a guy and it still cracked when he rolled it, but he did still have full rear fenders.
trpkkd
ok well the only plastics i'm painting are the radiator and gas tank covers so it should last a little while anyways. all the rest are white and i'm going to paint them blue to match the frame. they're red right now. trpkkd
also whats the best way to clean them before you paint them? thanks for all the info.
possum
Clean them with acetone or laquer thinner or cleanup thinner. Yea paint will crack if rolled. Its not really made to bend that far.
volcrano
use a grease and wax remover for prep. thinners can be too hot and melt the plastic unless you wipe it quick. bulldog is a great product. also. if you are using urethane clear, add a flex agent. it does what it says and helps durability. trpkkd
Thanks for all the info guys hopefully going to put it to good use in the next few weeks
possum
Volcrano is right it will start to melt plastic. But use it lightly and it will give the paint more to adhere to since the surface will be slightly opened up. Seems to work good for me. rjdgriff
Get some 5900 grease and wax remover from Orileys
4GivenByGodsGrace
dish detergent is the best to clean up plastics, and with a scuff pad will also prep it for paint. The adhesion promoter everyone is mentioning is a must.
