Uf21
Few questions. 1. Are the stock chains O-ring 2. Should I be applying chain oil every ride (cause I have been)? 3. What are is the best way to clean the chain (dependent on chain im guessing)?
Methfireroad
Well as to your second question I don't use chain oil for the fact that it attracts more sand and dirt to the chain. I think it functions better without all the sand and dirt stuck to it and might even last longer.
06BCBANSHEE
If you have a SE the chain is O ring. If not then its not a O ring chain. Yes you should lube your chain every ride. If you keep your chain clean and lube it properly. It will last and perform better than if you don't. I would imagine you will eat through sprockets a lot more quickly without chain lube. sheerider1026
The only way i roll is a nice quality o-ring chain. Keep your bike clean and maintained and no worries. I would never oil an o-ring chain
06BCBANSHEE
lube if its not o ring. if it is i would only lube it up rarely. and make sure its a o-ring lube. Do not use WD-40 on a O-ring chain. it will eat right through them. If its a reg chain wd-40 works good for getting out the water and preventing rust. Uf21
What's an se and How do I find out if it's and se? Also I heard something about putting the o-ring chain in diesel fuel and let it sit in there for 20 mins then scrub it down with a toothbrush to clean and you don't have to lube it since the diesel is basically the lube. Is this true? Does it work?

booxzzy
diesel is the best way to clean it but lube it after cleaning because now days diesel isn't as greasy as it was 20 years ago. and the best way to check is it O-ring or non O-ring chain is to clean it and than you will see. if you don't know how it should look than just google it. O-ring chain: https://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=o-ring+chain&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.41867550,d.dGI&biw=1366&bih=638&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=GnULUZmUEK6TiQfOuIGIBQ
booxzzy
OK,just read about o-ring chains on Wikipedia and washing it in diesel fuel is BIG NO,NO. Don't do it because you will wash out factory grease from it and also diesel can dissolve rubber O-rings and by doing that it can shorten your chain life drastically. I first wipe with clean oily cloth, than just with clean cloth and after it i spray chain wax,but that's because i ride only in sand so there is no mud to get chain dirty, its mostly just dust. WRONG, ALL Banshees came with O Ring chain from the factory!!!!! Who ever told you that only SEs had O Ring chains was feeding you a line to get you to buy a SE over a non-Special Edition. My 89 came with ORing chain from the factory when I bought it brand new, as did the 87 of my buddy, my wife's 96 and 97, my other buddy's 99, and another buddy's 2002, all wher bought brand new and all had O Ring chain, and none of them were SEs as SEs were not offered in those years. Well I had to order a chain last time from the yamaha dealership. they said the SE had the Oring and the others didn't. I didn't have the cash for o ring so i got a reg one.
