I've tig'd plenty of cast alu shit, with preheat and without, and i've never had any issues like that. In fact, I wouldn't even preheat that head, maybe if it super contaiminated to help pull the shit out of it, thats it. They aren't that thick. I guess if you had a Fisher-Price my first tig welder with no balls, preheat might help. I also wouldn't use any welding supplies made by Forney, like the stainless brush pictured in the first page of this pretty fucking rad thread.
