hunt3rm008
i rebuilt my topend a month ago and have only rode it for about an hour total so far because ive had so many problems with it. i sent my cylinders out to herr jugs racing and got them bored and honed with the piston kit. i put it all back together and it started right up but smoked A LOT. i thought it just had a bad head gasket so i ordered a new one and put it on, and it still smokes A LOT. i decided to check the compression and it did not go past 107PSI. i read that stock is usually 120-130 and anything with 110 or lower needs a rebuild. why is my compression so low? its freshly rebuilt. it starts up always on the 1-3rd kick. also my spark plugs were pretty wet when i checked them. the motor is completely stock besides being bored over to the next size. anyone know whats going on? camatv
might have a case seal bad or crank seal shot. if it has a TON of oil in it the rings havent seated yet.. do a leak down test and go from there.
hunt3rm008
where are those seals located? and how much is a leak down tester? what would that check for? leaks throughout the whole engine?
tsharktim
I think there's a pinned link in how tos on leakdown testers. U can make your own for about 20 bucks. I used the link to make mine and its a invaluable tool to have for two strokes. 6psi for 6 min is the goal. The seals r on either end of the crank but there's no sense pulling ur clutch cover and flywheel before u know if you have a leak or not cuz u gotta split the cases to replace seals anyway. Do the leakdown first it can eliminate a lot.
hoppedupandcutdown
http://bansheehq.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=110585 how-to on building a tester. Is it smoking coolant or oil? What prompted you to do the topend in the first place? sure your compression tester is accurate? got a Clymers manual?
vulvafan537240
how did you break this motor in?
hunt3rm008
The reason I rebuilt the motor was because I Bought it as a roller with the motor out and the motor had the top end pulled off. The kid just said it needed a new top end rebuild . Breakin it in I started it up and let it idle til warm and Shut it off to cool and repeated that a few times then on the 5th time after warming up I rode it very slowly not giving it much gas for 10 mins then let it cool and repeated that process babyin it. hunt3rm008
And I am not sure if it's burning oil or coolant. My coolant levels haven't gone down noticeably. How can I tell if it's oil burning ?

vulvafan537240
Did you check the compression when you put it together? Did you lose compression or was it at 107psi from the start? Edited October 29, 2012 by volfan537240
hunt3rm008
i did not check the compression after the rebuild so i am not sure. should i just rip on it? i thought you had to baby it for the first few hours
Jereme6655
Wait wait wait. First.......when you did your compression test.......did you hold the throttle wide open and continue to kick until the compression stopped rising?
