JoeStar85
How do i know when there is too much play in the rear axle to ride? I was getting it ready to ride for this weekend at camp when i realized that their is some play in the rear axle. It's not wobbling all over the place but there is some movement in it. I can't get the bearings to be able to fix it before i leave for camp and i was hoping if i don't jump it or beat the snot out of it the whole time that I could get away with doing a little riding this weekend. If I grab the rear tires and turn them in opposite directions there is about 1/4" of play. and a slight bit of play when pulling up and down, back and fourth. fastforworddad
If you can turn the tires in opposite directions and get a 1/4 inch of play, I would look at the nuts holding the axle hubs on for proper torque, make sure cotter key is in place. If the nuts are tight, I'm thinking that the splines on the axle and/or on the axle hubs are worn. As far as the axle bearings go, I would put rear of bike on a stand, check for axial and radial play. You might get lucky by putting a little more on the large nut closest to the sprocket, but not too tight where the axle will not spin smoothly. Really the best way to do this I found was too take the caliper off and take the chain off as well, this is how I did mine last week, but all my parts were fairly new so I went threw the extra trouble of removing brakes and chain, you might find that the nut has just worked it's way loose and a simple 1/2-1 turn on inside nut might suffice. I put a little locktite and inside nut and tighten outside jam nut tight against inside nut. Hope this helps. How do i know when there is too much play in the rear axle to ride?
