XXDEF1ANTXX
Last week I decided that i was gonna clean my k&n air filter which was caked in dirt, which has been tuned all summer for the clogged filter. I cleaned it and took the carbs off and cleaned them too. And after all the cleanin and maintance I fired it up and it ran horribly. Thick white smoke and oil coming out of the header at the motor and dripping out of the left silence. So after getting frustrated I ordered new rings and gaskets for the top end, got them installed them and still Im blowing thick white smoke. It passed a leak down test and all the bearing seals were good so now my question is how do I fix it? I have read thru the jetting faq a few times and I just dont understand the direction I need to go. My buddy says bigger pilots and mains for the increased air, im thinking smaller mains because of all the unburnt oil. It runs slightly better with the chole half open but it still bogs in the top end and just blows smoke. I have a stock motor with FmF gnarleys and Vitos Superstock Pistons as my only mods. Ive got a trip to Wayne National Forest comin up and I would appreciate any help. Current carb setup Mains jets = 280 Pilots = stock Air screw = 1.5 turns out
Finch
Go bigger your getting more air so less fuel also as it get colder in the fall youll need to go richer.

Finch
I'd leave pilot. Go up one at a time on your main
BUILDER
If it ran fine before you took the carbs off then I would say you have the slides in wrong or you missed something in the carbs when you put them back together dude. You really rebuilt the topend becasue it ran bad after you rebuilt the carbs???

XXDEF1ANTXX
I rebuilt the top end because my rings were worn down and it was do anyways. anyways.. I have no idea where to start with tuning this thing. Ive been trying for 2 days to tune this thing and I havnt got anywhere. Ive read the Jetting sticky a few times, googled my problems and no solution has worked. It was tuned fine for my previously dirty K&N filter (its clean and oiled now) and I just cant seem to dial it in. Ive increased the pilot jets and its seemed to help the idle out, but it will idle fine for 3 minutes or so then rev out and I shut it off. It goes from barely idling then to wide open all by itself. I have checked and rechecked for leaks and there is none, it also blows out heavier than normal smoke and above normal unburnt oil out of the exhaust header pipe. It only really blows out extra unburnt oil when it revs high, say from 1/2 to Wot. The extra oil coming out as mentioned concerns me because it was never like that before. Im 300ft above sea level fmf gnarly pipes radvalves vitos prostock pistons and a K&N filter with the lid on the airbox (no snorkel) stock carbs airscrew is 1.5 turns out 280 mains 30 pilots I increased the pilot because it ran better with the choke out a click and also i took the airscrews out about 3 turns
knelson
you do have the choke tube installed between the carbs right?
XXDEF1ANTXX
Thanks all, turns out I had the carb slides switched and backards. Explains all my issuses. I made a rookie mistake and I am confirmed for pants on head retarded. The shame is almost unbearable.
03DMshee
Shit happens to everyone at some point.... Next time try doing it the old school way and check over everything you did...everyone runs to the internet for everything these days and that takes the fun and the learning experience away in my book... Glass to hear you got the problem resolved
