Looking for a new work truck

I'm looking for a new work truck. I'm done with chevys and gmc's. The gas mpg's are awful even with the 4.8l. I drive a lot and average about 40,000 miles a year. I need something with good fuel mileage but also needs a v8 for hauling capabilities. And it needs to be at least a 1/2 ton. Throw me some opinions guys.

my dad has a 4.6 f150, depending on the load and how you drive, it ranges from like 13-18 towing on the highway.

my brother got an ecoboost for a rental while his tundra was getting the frame fixed, that ecoboost is fucking bad ass.

brother's tundra has a 4.7, it sucks gas down, going to Ls last year, i think we were getting like 12mpg, towing a little trailer that held one quad. but we was going like 80-90 most of the way. plus the bed is too small for a work truck.

I'm gonna use it for a pilot car to follow oversized loads so between 50 and 65 mph. The most it will haul is a couple of shee's on a trailer. I think im gonna checkout the f150's. Thanks for the help guys

Its ironic (in my area atleast) most of the 3/4 and 1 ton diesel pickups end up as "hotrods" for the redneck crowd while Rangers and S10s are commonly seen hauling yard waste, toys, pop up campers, boats, ect...

Its rather annoying because every stoplight is a race for them (which means blackout for us) and they clutter up the byron dragstrip with their buddies pulling ghey ass 13-14 seconds at best while the real 8-10 second cars have to wait in line for these fags to finish.
