Hiram Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 I have CPI's on the way and my quad is stock and was wondering should I get a jetkit and which one or should I just buy individual assortment of jets? Iam at sea level and will be running the airbox with lid and without a snorkle for now, what do you guys recommend? Quote
BenBB Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 I wouldn't waste my money on a "jet kit", just get the jets from whoever has them cheapest...most bike shops will have small hex Mikuni mains in stock. To get the most out of those pipes you REALLY need to upgrade the air filter setup, depending on where you're riding either a foam or K&N in the airbox with no lid (on an adapter that doesn't rely on the lid to secure the filter), carb-mounted foam or K&N filters, or a Toomey 2 into 1. Anyway, if you hafta run it with the stock airbox and no snorkel for now, I'd start with 290 mains, stock pilots and needle clip position. Should be a safe starting point (assuming 32:1 premix ratio, near sea level, and 60-80 degrees F, if higher elevation drop one size for every 2000' or so, if colder add a size for every 30 degrees or so). If it bogs at WOT drop a size on the mains until it revs out clean. More info on dialing in the jetting circuits in the Jetting FAQ below. Good luck. Quote
Hiram Posted October 1, 2003 Author Report Posted October 1, 2003 Thanks for that info what about the needle? stock is fine? And as far as air filter adapters which one has the best air flow? I have heard the pro design is not as open as the intake boot and there might be some with a larger opening? Quote
BenBB Posted October 1, 2003 Report Posted October 1, 2003 I run an UMI adapter plate, works great: http://www.umiracing.com If you want max flow and don't care if you lose a little bottom end power go with carb-mounted filters, otherwise go with the adapter in the box with no lid or the Toomey 2 into 1. Usually you won't need to mess with the needle clip position unless you get aftermarket reeds/cages, but they are all a little different so I would dial in the mains and then see if there's any bog or hesitation between about 1/4 and 3/4 throttle, if so you can play with the needle clip positions and see if it helps or not. Some people like aftermarket needles, some didn't notice much difference so it's up to you if you want to try them or not (I haven't tried anything but stock so can't offer a firsthand opinion). Good luck. Quote
Hiram Posted October 2, 2003 Author Report Posted October 2, 2003 Will the UMI plate work with a foam filter setup? Quote
BenBB Posted October 2, 2003 Report Posted October 2, 2003 I'm sure it would, if you could find the right foam filter to fit it...you might email UMI and see what they say (I have a K&N on mine). Quote
Hiram Posted October 3, 2003 Author Report Posted October 3, 2003 What size range of jet should I buy? 290 down? or ? Quote
BenBB Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 I'd get a pair of 280, 290 and 300's. Wouldn't hurt to have 270's just in case, and you'll eventually need larger ones too if you get the air filter and can remove the airbox lid...310, 320 and maybe 330's. Quote
txblueshee Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 I'm tryin to get/give a little info here... shouldn't he get some 27.5/30pilots?? I run 310mains 30pilots w/ the pro-design K&N setup, snorkle removed, reeds and small holes in the lid. Quote
Screamin_Banshee Posted October 3, 2003 Report Posted October 3, 2003 Does anyone else think that the Jetting & Exhaust forum should be changed to BenBB's Jetting Forum? Not a smart ass crack Ben, but a compliment, thanks for all the jettin help you give. I know I appreciate (sp?) it, and sure many others do to! Quote
Hiram Posted October 3, 2003 Author Report Posted October 3, 2003 Ok more changes of plans, I also ordered the racelogic porting template and will be going to town on my jugs before putting the pipes on, does that change the range you just mentioned? and should I get the 27.5 pilot also? Quote
BenBB Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 True txblueshee, larger pilots would be a good idea, but the pilots and mains will still depend alot on the air filter/box setup...30's for sure if no lid (possibly even larger than that, I run 32.5's for 3500' or 35 pilots @ sea level with a K&N). I kinda doubted more than 25's would be needed if the airbox lid was still on & intact (but I could be wrong). Heh Screamin', it's not my house but I haven't been run off yet... Hiram, it's hard to pin down jetting for porting since there's so many variables, and I don't have alot of experience there. Your best bet would be to see what Racelogic's recommendations are and go from there. Your drag pipes will likely need a little richer main jetting than other pipes, and again the airbox setup you decide on will have some affect as well. The best advice I can offer is to start with the mains on the rich side and work your way down. Good luck and let us know what you think of the templates. Quote
reas11 Posted October 4, 2003 Report Posted October 4, 2003 true ben knows his jetting .. thats how u know banchetta isn't around either most of his posts are in the same forum .. keep it up ben . Quote
Hiram Posted October 5, 2003 Author Report Posted October 5, 2003 I picked up 280,290,300's to start since the only airbox changes will be removal of the snorkle for now, I will be putting on the pipe on next week and then doing the porting the following week after that as to be able to compare and will definatly take some pics and let you guys know the outcome, thanks...................
