92 shee
Trying to figure this problem out got a 92 banshee, stock carbs, tors removed with carb caps and idle kit, wiring is stripped down to bare minimum, just has key switch to turn on and off,so when key is on machine will start and run for about couple of seconds and then dies,go to start it back up and nothing, check spark and nothing,i traced it to the cdi box, i take the cdi box off of the frame and tap the cdi box with my hand and then i have spark again? could the cdi box be defective,i checked the gap between the stator and pickup its within spec( business card),checked the whole harness its good,i dont have a ohms meter to check out the stator, pickup, coil and other electrical parts, are the aftermarket adjustible cdi boxes anygood? Thanks for your help Eric....
Starwriter
It is fairly common for a CDI box to fail like that. Common enough that banging on the CDI is actually a diagnostic procedure. Buy a used stock CDI.
thomas h.
After market boxes don't have a strong top end spark. Most dyno guys remove them. You might try to fix the terminals by closing the gap for a tighter fit. Also some use some die Eletric grease, could help.
TheBigShabowski
I had one a couple weeks ago that acted the same way. Ended up being the pickup. When it heated up the coil in the pickup was shorting than it would cool off and it would refire for 30 sec or so and short out again.
