ontario banshee stock head shave question

Recommended Posts

hey guys i have a 2005 banshee special edition very low hours and never had a top end done i know there is tons of threads and i been looking into this for abit but i just have a question about shaving the head if i wanted to shave the stock head around .025 - .030 can i just run an indicator along the top get it as perfectly flat as possible and just skim .025 - .030 thousandths off the top without making any other modifications? for the squish and such? also ive never had the top end done and i was wondering if i should just wait to do this modification when i re do my top end ? i also got a adjusting timing plate from charriot if i put it to +4 will i notice a big difference on my 2005 with 290 mains and t5 pipes?

thanks everyone for their help and time

i took .030 off my head and added +4 timing on 93 pump gas, woke it up a little bit. i would say go for it and shave the head, they are easy to take off and head gaskets are $10. thats all ive done to my stock engine, no other mods needed when i shaved the head

I would have a shop do it,there are some other factors, like are you going to port it,and if so,are going to run race fuel and what is your elevation you ride in and what compression your wanting. If you have the equipment to shave the head down, what ever your wanting to take off of it,i would go 5 thousands under and sand the other 5 thousands down so you have a smooth surface, weve ran many shaved stock heads and at 420 ft above sea level and head milled down to 40 t dont housands gave use 160 compression, and thats a fine line on running race gas,but we got away with running pump gas without detenation in the cylinder, your best bet would b to buy a cool head with inter changeable dooms for better cooling and then you can already have that when you want to go farther on the mods imo.And milled heads around 40 thousands have a better chance of blowing a head gasket. As far as the timing goes,i really dont see a need for it since its not ported and having t5s are for ported cylinders,so you would get more benifit out of the t5s,T6s are for non ported engines,t5s are for ported engines,i'm sure there will be a few who will chime in on this topic....hope this helps

yes i forgot to mention im running t5s with vforce 3 reeds and stock top end but as soon as my top end goes im going to port my cylinders for a trail port (but if i get a port its a good idea to get a welded and true crank am i correct??) also my city of Cambridge is 950 feet [289.56 m] above sea level i dont want to mill down to much i want to shave it like .20 to 25 thou my question is can i just straight skim it .20 thou and smoothen the last .005 thou without having to make any other special cuts

i really appreciate this bansheehq group and all the admins efforts

you should be fine a port doesnt change your compression ( correct me if im wrong please ) but with running a port and the added power you should get a welded crank , with all bolt on power you pushing the limit a bit but when you step into the porting bracket then you want a welded crank you dont want to risk not having it . another thing with all that power she might be running alittle hot to without any cooling mods done like a cool head would be a better choice then shaving the stock , inline coolers for hoses , bigger rad , upgraded impeller . all those help
