We used to ride together a lot, and he recently picked up a mild 2003 Banshee. Pipes, heads, ect. So I decided to take it for a spin, and the fever started right back. So, now im on Craigslist looking for Banshees. Im pretty set on a Banshee. The ones I had in the past were sledgehammer reliable, and we all know they mod up great. I really never cared for the smooth power of the modern 4-strokes anyhow. Good handling takes a back seat also. In the past I have owned my slew of 250Rs, banshees, Raptor, and a few LT500s. My question is this. Having been totally out of the loop for a while, I am really behind on performance mods. Handling, and breaking are 2 things that I couldnt care less about in a quad. Straight line performance. Thats it. Top end power, nothing more. No mud ever. Dirt and concrete. Big powerslides, mile long wheelies, drag racing, and top end blasts were more our style. In the past, we always stepped out the front sprocket at least 1 tooth for our style of riding. Also, im not looking to go into the engine. Just bolt ons. That in mind, what would be the first, say, $1500 in mods you would do to a banshee in terms of Pipes, reeds, carbs, and head mods? I always had pretty good luck by taking 30-thous off my stock heads. (We own a machine shop) My past banshees had T5s, reeds, and thats pretty much it. What brand of pipes are the new hottness? Back in the day, it was all about the Toomey T-5s. Do they still hold up to modern design? I want to keep it limited to bolt-ons right now. Hold on to you pocketbook Oh, trust me, I know the depths that motorsports can make you stoop to. Cars, quads, antique pulling tractors, boats. Done a little bit of all of it. I wouldn't look for a stock bike when you could get a modded one for what you want to spend. Then have even more money to play with mods. Where are you located? Even if you got a mint all stock Banshee for FREE, it's still cheaper to buy one already built. For example, the last one I bought. Ported, matched cases, welded crank, bored to 64.50, wiseco pistons, cylinders polished, Vforce reeds, billet intakes, 33mm PWKs, K&N pods, polished clutch cover, billet stator cover, foot pegs, shifter, clutch insert, water pump cover, reservoir covers, handlebar clamp, Toomey T5 pipes, Lonestar +4 chrome roundhouse swinger, Lonestar axle, Douglas blue label wheels, scat trac haulers and mohawks, chromed stock A arms, kick starter, and rear brake pedal. $2,500 with a title. Believe me, I know all to well that buying what you want, already built is MUCH cheaper than building from scratch. I completely rebuilt 2 LT500s from the ground up. Did not come out ahead on that deal. Lol. Problem is around here, and everything within 300miles. Most people selling used banshees that have been "modded" really dont have a clue how to mod a banshee. They see FMF pipes as top of the line. Most of the ones I see for sale around here have junk pipes, some BS intake setup, and not much else. So, even if I do get one, it would be like id be starting from scratch, as id have to remove all the choad mods. Finding one is not really the problem. There are 10 for sale withing 200mi from me right now. My main concern is where to apply the $1500 in mods. As I said, I have been out of the game for a while, and 8-10years of tech has passed me by. Beyond that, split the cases, have the crank trued and welded (If the crank is trashed, upon inspection, buy a new Hot Rods crank), billet water pump gear and impeller, and a few tranny mods to make it shift better. Start out with a good bottom end foundation and then you can always improve on the top end several ways in various stages. Ported stock cylinders, cool head, reeds, intakes, carbs, cheetah cylinders, etc. Shocks, A arms, swingarm, axle, wheels, tires and bling are all things that can be done one thing at a time. trickedcarbine Posted July 29, 2012 Report Share Posted July 29, 2012 In my opinion, if you are on a 4,500 budget and all the rides out by you are roaches, maybe the best thing to do would be to buy a cheap roach. Find something with a blown top end or worse. Then spend 3,500 on it once and be done. I can drive there and back in 8 hours,and the selection,quality,and prices are wayyy better there. Im seeing clean,nodded bikes for $2500 or so.
