shift mods

Dosnt that just suck!! I would love to be able to shift without using the clutch but just like you I have to down shift hard at times

Same here. I motor break and back off all the time.

Now for the over ride guys, can you down shift and get back on the throttle? Or once you pull in the clutch from fifth gear are you committed to that stop and go all the way back down to first to get going again?

I have done all kinds of down shifting forgetting to grab the clutch, start in other gears all the time...like slowing down, downshifting while going then taking off in 3 or 4th and no issues.....and ive been lucky with it.....and its not been the same tranny been in quite a few motors with different trannys.

I hear horror stories about back loading and down shifting. So i can go from fifth gear to third and get back on it?

on the duneable Kevin told me just to not use serious engine braking. that I could downshift under power. as in matching speed and engine rpm. so far so good.

I didnt say you could...i said i have done stupid stuff like that before....with no issues....kinda like a oops type deal.

The more u try to back load the engine the more it will push on the forks and it trys to push the gears apart.

That is how it bends the forks, thats why there is springs in the duneable trannys but after a while even those are gonna end up with bent forks its just a matter of time.

The standard drag trannys are a little more forgiving on the banshee's then some people think, now the 4 strokes not so much...lol

  • 3 weeks later...

took me awhile to get my bike back together. i had a issue in the front left wheel. i replaced a few things aswell as bought a set of lonestar yfz450 spindles shafts. stuff seems to be alright now.

took the bike out for a ride to make sure im still having the shift issue and like magic my lexan cover back off coating me in oil. no biggy, i bought a few screws and loctite them sobs, seems to be working so far. while i was under the lexan i took the lockup off and replaced the springs with 6 hd's. unfortunately nothing changed. looks like im left with no choice. i need trans modifications.

Your cover came loose again? WTF? Your not backing plugs at all are you? (And YES your going to have to do the tranny mod for that bike to shift.) Are you going to have your stuff ready for the September 21-22-23 dune trip?

this bike refuses to shift unless im off the gas and rolling for a second. im pretty poor right now, i wanna come to the September trip but idk if ill have the funds :(

ok like i have said about 900 times you have to do everything to the trans to get it to work right. you cannot JUST do the shift star or JUST do the shaft , or JUST do the gears's dogs. just like anything else one wrong thing and it wont work. also need to fully inspect the trans and gears for any abnormal wear. yes they wear out. there are a few other lil tricks you can do involving aligning the gear's bushings and/or adding bearing to existing bushed gears. a 1-6 N down trail trans is completely doable. i am also working on a true backloadable trail/ drag trans but am unsure if my idears will even work. just something i need to get done and start testing on. its on my winter list of things to develop..

most problems i have seen were from gear wobble, misaligned bushings causing drag and gear out of alignments from wear on serviceabl;e parts. clutch adjustments' clutch drag, and clutch lockups also have a lot to do with ease of shifting.

it sounds to me like you just need to split it apart and do the gears and you should be good to go. if it still wont shift time to change your riding style or look at the clutch..

if i had money burning a hole in my pocket id ship u my engine. or atleast my trans. i did eveything to my bike....... besides the cut trans. it sucks to have gotten this far and achieved this much progress on my high hp bike to still not be done. im not discouraged though, i will get it done. just as soon as i can afford it lol.
