thinking about switching to alky

Recommended Posts

well i think i finally found a supply of alky i called days auto south of kc he said he sales by the gal... thinking of making the switch im running 35mm airstrikers will this carb be ok to run on the stock stroke dune port motor? ill be having domes cut for the alky and have to have the carbs set up for it, as i know Nothing about alky. just looking for all around info... heres what i have right now in pieces for a motor... dune port by fast stock cylinder/stroke bike , hot rods crank, +4 timing , 20cc domes , at t5s , and will have a 1-5 redline duneable

so will 35 airstrikers be a good carb to have set up for alky , or should i sell these and find a different set of carbs.

I know ill need custom cut domes... what else

Are you aware of the downfalls of running alky- your fuel usage will be twice what it is with gas, so you will only be able to go half as far on a tank of fuel; you have to purge the fuel system if the bike is going to sit for more than 1/2 hour, so when you break for lunch you need to purge it, when you quite riding for the day you need to purge it, etc. Alky likes collect moisture out of the atmosphere, so you don't want alot of it sitting around getting water in it, that means you will have to get fuel before every ride. You will need to get your domes, timing, and carbs set up for alky so you are going to spend a fair amount of cash just to even try alky. The other problem is alky will burn on your skin without being able to see it burning. The only plus is it doesn't cost as much as race gas. All in all it is alot of work to save a few bucks on fuel, especially when you will be able to only go half as far on a tank of fuel.

I know guys who run alky. you dont have to purge for 1/2 hr of down time. i know ppl who have let it sit for a couple days before purging. but i dont ride much and i dont go for (long) rides so fuel consumption is not something im worried about. just wanted to know as far as setup what all im going to need. ill have jeff or cam set up the carbs so i dont screw that up.. just wondering what all this is going to cost me and get it all set up before i throw my motor back together.

My wife runs those same carbs (35mm Air Strykers) setup for alky with billet bowls on her Redline ported 4mil with in frame CPIs. No pump. It's plenty of carb. 39's would probably be better but she doesn't ride much anyway. If you just want to test it out and see if you like it (which you will) then you should be fine. Just make damn sure you get a reputable builder to set them up for you.

id keep those 35's, have jeffrey set em up for your methanoll and get rid of those t-5's for some CPIs.

that should be a fun little motor on alcohol....

i had pretty much same motor on gas with 33's and cpis and it ran very well.

a pingle might not be a bad idea and drill out the vent in your gas cap as well.

no downsides to using methanol IMO.

if you keep up with your maintenance, purging any remainding methanol iside your engine is just one more maintenance item.

As far as purging that is what I was told when I looked into converting to alky 20 years ago. Maybe it was because we have much more moisture here in Oregon, I don't know, that was just what I was told. As for the fire danger, I have seen it first hand at the drag races(cars, not ATVs). The fuel mileage everybody knows about, I have read it on here, the air/fuel mixture for combustion is double the fuel over what gasoline is. In my opinion, alky is great for the track but it is not the best fuel for trail riding due to the decreased range per tank.

Ive already got the dual pingle looks like im pretty much set then .. other then domes , and carb set up .. im going to switch pipes here soon, prob go shearer or sniper. but leaning toward shearer because of availability and price. Dont want to start a whole shearer vs sniper thread .. im going to go 4 cub over the winter , just wanted to experiment with the little stock stroke ...

I dune ride the piss out of my blue bike on methanol all the time. Methanol conversion is the first thing I do on any bike I keep. I would never dune on gas, that shit sucks.
