Trans Not Shifting when Drag Racing

Recommended Posts

I rebuilt my motor about a month ago and made it a 421 from Wicked. I mostly ride trails but i also like to drag my buddys on there 450s. If i try to drag race i start in 2nd and can get it into 3rd gear but it wont go into 4th or 5th if I have it pined, you really have to let out on it to get it to go into 4th. I have been reading posts that higher HP engines need to make there tranny a OVERRIDE TRANS. Is this true or is there somthing else i can do or buy that would help my shifting problem better?

Talk to CAMATV on here. He does a tranny mod that would probably fix your problem.

I wouldn't do an override if you're going to continue to trail ride it.

I have a 421 cub that I like to drag race from time to time also and shifing is a issue. I have spent a lot of time trying to make it shift. The one easy thing which I am guesing you have done is the modified shift star the other thing to do is to make damn sure your shift shaft is in really good shape and is adjusted up where it needs to be. If you get everything set well they will shift even with a little more power than stock.

Nothing shifts like an override, period. However, my advice is to get a modified/cut stock tranny.

I don't know anything about Wicked....but I'd talk to them first.

I'm sure other site sponsors like HJR and FAST can help as well. There are a few bolt on mods that will help, but in my opinion, you'll have to go more.

Cut every other dog off the tranny for starters, making sure the main shafts are clean, straight and bur/wear free...

I had a 4 mil cub and a new clutch with the pancake bearing/pusher mod, and my stock trans was in great shape, under full power it just wouldn't shift reliably.
