Shearer or sniper pipes

Recommended Posts

Loco as far as your big bore pipes not fitting, I called shearer to ask if big bore pipes would work on my serval since I am thinking of doing a 535 anyway and will need these pipes.. His responce was NO THEY WERE NOT MADE TO FIT ON A CUB AND WILL HIT THE FRAME. He said they were made for the 535 cyl apperently the exhaust on the cyl is at a different location.

So your having to use a pry bar is normal since it is the wrong pipe for a cub.

Try putting a ford header on a chevy if wont work either?

Loco has a dm and im pretty sure he has the dm shearers too. But you and mat are right about the big bore pipes not fitting stock/cub jugs. I tried a set on my 421 and they hit the lower frame rails. You'd have to raise the front of the motor about 1" to get em to go on.

you do realize that as far as cubs go, mat shearer is the only person that has a 200hp 4mm cub. it may have a turbo but it also has that 2 into 1 pipe that every joe blow knows doesnt work well.

further more the 2 into 1 pipe on a n/a bike is a great pipe for trails/dunes

Thank you Bill... I was waiting for someone to chime in and say that. That pipe wasn't designed to be a be all, end all. It was designed because Matt felt the small turbo crowd needed a better pipe.

I know of one other guy, a HUGE Shearer nut swinger, who was saying the 2 into 1 was the best pipe since sliced bread.

It probably does do good on a duner/play bike. I've read plenty of info that the old 2-1 pipe by Moto-Fast wasn't as good as a set of PC pipes, FMF or a few other twin sets.

When we get a chance to meet up Bill, I'd like to talk about your actual use with the Shearer 2-1 pipe.

If you're referring to Tom Gagnon's turbo bike... For the love of all things holy, that bike fucking RIPS.

Absolutely not....I KNOW that bike was an animal.

Turbo bikes are either feast or famine. They're touchy and picky, it would be nice to have an EFI setup...but I understand there's a larger cost involved.

I've seen one of Dan Hull's A&S bikes RIP down the track with a turbo.

No Matt, I was not talking about Tom's bike.

Finally someone hits on this point. The BB pipes were made for motors that will need BB pipes. A motor like a 421 cub is not supposed to be running a BB pipe. BB pipes were made for longer stroke motors in cc sizes around 535 and larger. If you have a smaller stroke motor, your exhaust sits lower on the cylinder than a taller stroke motor. (Think about people who run a 4 mill crank and a spacer plate....the pipes will raise up too!)

So people buy a pipe thinking that it's the best fit for their build instead of calling the guy who makes them and asking what pipe they should run.

Also this never gets mentioned, but when Calvin casts these cylinders the bottom and the top of the cylinder need to be machined to be plumb with the bore. Sometimes the bore section can be a little off plumb and the cylinder needs to be made true again. Fixing this alignment issue can cause the cylinder itself to be tilted forward or back slightly. Thus putting the exhaust exit angle and height at a slightly different point from time to time. Now that's not a knock at Calvin, because that's just the way things go in the world of cast cylinders. (Everyone has seen a core shift every once and a while.) That doesn't mean it's bad or wrong....just different. But Matt get's the blame if the pipe doesn't fit. :shrugani:

I previously pasted pictures that "2strokespirit" posted showing brand new Shearer In-Frame pipes mounted nicely in two different frames. He ordered 4 sets and had NO ISSUES with them.

He mentioned that he had bigger issues with the one set of CPI's that he bought at the same time. A person having a problem with one set of CPI's does not prove that Shearers fit.

Those pictures of Shearer pipes mounted nicely in the frame prove that they fit. I was struck by the fact that after all the bashing of Shearer fitment, that a set of CPI's would be a bigger issue than anything the Shearers posed.

Tyler just out of curiosity, how much HP are you making with your RELINE DM with SHEARER pipes? I just thought I'd ask since nobody has talked about Snipers or Performance since I made my "Fitment cheerleader" comment.

I think we have sufficiently covered the fitment debate at this point and I was just curious if anyone wanted to get back to taking about the 99HP Passion/Sniper DM runs that Mailman posted?

You can't honestly believe that a few thousandths shaved off a cylinder will affect how a set of pipes fixed. I mean, come on now, really, really?

I forgot who stated it, may have been PassionRE, may not have been. But for some reason I think it was him, I apologize if not,. Either way whoever it was had to take a tiny bit off the cylinder exhaust port to get the pipes to fit on. Also my shearers fit fine without the o-rings, then once I put them in I couldn't get the pipes to go on with them flanges greased and two guys pushing. I believe a few thousandths makes a difference but thats just me.

It depends where it comes off of. He was talking about off the base of the cylinder. I'm gonna guess the tolerances of the pipes/cylinders/o-rings/frame/paint/powdercoat would make up for the little bit of slack you need to make a pipe fit (if it was made correctly).

So, does Shearer make a BB pipe for the 10mm Cub or does he send out the BB pipes knowing they won't fit?

Your Ford/Chevy comparison is ignorant.

The poll might work good, however you would need to include the people who had fitment issues, then later on bought another pair even though they had problems before. Something works with Shearers, otherwise people including yourself would buy more than one set. I dont think thats the issue, everyone knows they work, and some have fitment/chroming issues.

Also maybe include how many people on this forum run Shearers, then how many run Snipers. It's been obviously stated for the last 4 years how people have issues with fitment and chrome. But people still run them, once again its the fact they are proven by 100's if not 1000's of people. I have no idea how many people run Snipers, from the looks of it on the forum 10 or so???

I am starting to think you have a reading problem. I think we've pretty much established the only reason people buy Shearers is because they perform well.

When I had my 18DMs built, Sniper hadn't even released a pipe yet. Redline said Shearers, so that's what I went with.

You trying to compare Shearer to Sniper in a sales sense is absurd. Please tell me you're kidding. Snipers have been out for about two years. How long for Shearer?

That's like saying Kia sucks because they haven't sold as many vehicles as Ford. It's just asinine.

Cameron estimates it to be around 130HP I think. I've never had it on a dyno.

Someone really wanted to run those pipes bad as hell to mess with the cyl
