Exciting new carb issues

Recommended Posts

So I got my twist throttle today and decided to check if my jets were clean as in a reply from a previous thread. As i removed the main jet I read the number 270 on one and when I went to the other carb it was a 200. This, combined with torn intake boots, bad reed gaskets and no link hose between the carbs would probably why this thing did not run right.

So long story short I should buy a jet kit. Any recommendations?

replace with new intake boots, gaskets and choke cross over tube inbetween the carbs. clean carbs while your down there. make sure borth carbs have a 270 main jet in them if you have a aftermarket exhaust. make sure lid is off air box and that you have a after market air filter like a k&n or prodesign. 270 main will work great in the summer with a bike that has aftermarket exhaust , air box lid off aftermarket airfilter and if your elevation is below 2000ft. this is considering your cylinders are not ported. this should get you on the right track. no dont buy a jet kit. its not needed. remember to bump your mains up in the winter. fyi the best thing you can do after all this is done is a plug chop and look at the plugs. a leakdown test is also very important

One more question my throttle housing seems to conflict with the brake lever and resevoir, Do you guys just tilt the brake mounting forward for room?

i had to have my brake lever in an odd position for my twist pistol to work, but i have since put a thumb throttle on...

I did not have a small enough screw driver last night. So today i put in the 270s after buying one and discovered it has 25 pilots and the needles are some odd ball size from moose racing. I have fmf gold series with aftermarket air filter but with box on and live in iowa. Do I need to change the pilots to like a 30 or 27.5? And I do have stock needles from a bag the guy gave me should I put those in instead?

Got my throttle on, kept the 270s with 25 pilots and stock needles on third clip. air screws 1 1/2 turns out. I am still having the same issue. It will start first kick with no choke on and will idle about 5 seconds, idle down a bit and then die. I will kick it again and it will fire but die even quicker. Then it takes like five kicks to get it to start and die again. I could repeat this process every day and have same exact results. Any body have any suggestions what to do next? Also keep in mind my carbs are not synced but they are close by eye and I kind of need to get the thing to idle in order to sync it properly.

Try the 27.5 pilot. That should solve the idling issue. And maybe give Jeff at fast a call. He could give you a good starting point for jets

At this point, I would do a compression test and a leakdown test. Due to the mismatched jets, and torn boots you may have some engine damage. What is your elevation? If you are near sea level, 270s might still be lean.I would also put the 27.5 pilots in and see if it helps. When you get it running, you may want to try the Moose needles, they might change the way the powerband comes on or how much power you have in the mid range.
