Buying a used Banshee

Recommended Posts

Hi, Im new to this forum. I was wondering if anyone knew of this problem. I am currently in the process of buying a 04 Banshee that is bone stock. The guy says that it cranks and will idle all day long but when you go to put it in gear it bogs down and cuts off. Now, I've asked a few of my mechanic friends and they say it sounds like the carburetors maybe clogged, spark plugs may be bad. The guy did tell me that he thinks a wire may have been cut or disconnected. My question is, what do you guys think is wrong with it and would it be an easy fix based on what info I've given you?

Parking break or tors or carbs clogged. If the price is right buy it. These bikes are easy to work on.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking. I just talked to the guy and he said "It cranks but once you hit the gas it cuts off like it loses pressure." I don't think its the compression because it cranks and its not the plugs because of the same reason. Only problem is i haven't worked on a quad in some years and my quad i have now is a 400ex. But the price is $1900 and I just didn't want to spend that money and this thing be a pain in the ass. Thanks for you input man.

Well I'm negotiating down to 1500. Plus the Banshee is getting really hard to find and everyone that i have found is either just been sold or does not even reply. I live in Georgia so i figured there would be plenty but they are legitimately hard to find. I just found one that for 1900 that has a raptor body on it for some reason and was just freshly rebuilt but i don't want to get it because of the body. But if anyone can maybe give me an idea of what the problem is would be helpful. Thanks

My advice, don't pay more than 1100 if you REALLY REALLY want it. It's just not worth that much. New pipes will run you $600+ or $300+ used on here for something in good shape. These are simple machines but will eat a hole in your wallet in a hurry. $1900 is a pretty decent banshee that already had all the bolt ons. Also, as hard as it is to do, don't rush this. Take your time, do the research, and be patient. Rushing a buy usually just leads to regret.

Just found another one that is 2800 and has "a fresh rebuilt top end and bored .30 over. There are a few mods on this ATV including and orange powder coated frame, upgraded suspension (adjustable upper and lower control arms), upgraded axle (lonestar), good tires and no to mention it is VERY FAST and will start on the FIRST KICK!!!! I don't want to get rid of it but my wife complains about it taking up garage space." This is straight from his post about his quad. Im thinking either this one or the one with the raptor body. Also, how much does an OEM banshee plastic kit usually run at?

First thing, never trust anyone selling a quad. The only way to test how "fresh" the rebuild is, is to do a compression test. A fresh rebuild is going to be on the 140 psi range. If he won't let you do the test, walk away. Maybe here in Michigan prices are way lower, but a 2800 dollar banshee is a pretty bad ass machine.
