RaptorDuner
I bought a '02 Shee with CPIs and I'm trying to make them at least a little quieter for the Oregon Dunes. Searched the HQ as well as the rest of the net and haven't found much so I bought a 1.25" 180 degree mandrel bent stainless tube and I'm gonna cut and make tips similar to the old style Cascade tips. Has anyone done this? What's your best guess on the decibel reduction?
sheerider11
I don't think that's going reduce the noise, it just redirects it making it seem quiet. Did you try repackaging the silencers?
RaptorDuner
They will have a fresh repack when they go back together. Just wanting it to be quieter to the Forest Service sound checkers way of checking it.
BigRed350x
Get some cascade CSFX silencers.
RaptorDuner
Not in the budget before my next dune trip (July 4th week). I always wanted a Banshee and finally bought one. If it's everything I hoped, then CSFXs and other mods will be done in the off season. Just trying to get it to a point that the law won't notice me as much. Banshee Chad
I'm sure u got some stockers laying around... Cut em and use high temp silicon hose to connect and fill the gap. I do that when I hit the mtns. Got about 3 inches of hose between the head pipe and stinger. But it works. RaptorDuner
I don't have any extra Banshee specific parts around. I bought the Shee off of CL just the way it is. I cut the turndowns yesterday and will bore the CPI tips to accept them tomorrow @ work. I'll have to crimp (swedge) the part that goes into the tip about an 1/8th of an inch to leave enough material to tap so I can use screws to retain the tip. We have a decibel meter @ work so I'll check before and after to see if it works and post some pictures of the finished product.

bansheesandrider
I did this to the silencers I had before I bought my old style CSFX silencers. I used aluminum pipe and bent a 90 on it. I then had a buddy who is a certified welder weld them onto the silencer end cap. I repacked them and put them together( my old packing was in good shape but I put new in anyway). It seemed to make a difference, I was never checked so it did what I was hoping it would do- keep me from getting a ticket. Eventually I bought the CSFX silencers, because several people told me that with those on the bike the sound check people would not even bother checking me, I did have the courtesy check done on those and it was 87db, but they did not seem much quieter than the ones I modified. RaptorDuner
87db is quiet. My Barker's on my Raptor are 92db and I thought that was good. If I keep it, I'll end up with the CSFX silencers. A TIG welder is in my future but I got an awesome deal on a plasma cutter (Hypertherm 1000) that will cut 1.25" steel so the welder got pushed back. There is a ton of stuff I will make for my hobbies when I get one.
sheerider11
How do they check? Just your bike at idle?
RC418
How do they check? Just your bike at idle? Every time ive been checked in Oregon they test at 1/4 throttle. Back when I was younger I had a KX80, we lived in a neighborhood with a strict covenance so we used like a 8-10" piece of bicycle tube zip tied to the silencer so I could ride around the yard when I was bored. It actually made a huge difference believe it or not but looked kinda ghetto lmao
RaptorDuner
They have a chart for the RPMs. I believe it's 50% of the manufacturer recommended max operating RPM and the Banshee, IIRC, is around 3750 rpms. They use an oscillating tach that they lay on your machine and the meter is like 20 inches away from the tip at a 45 degree angle. Target is 93 db but because they can't control ambient noise in the field, they give you 2 more db leeway. Back when I was younger, I had a CR250 (Red Racer) that I did nothing to quiet down and it must of annoyed the hell out of the neighbors but no one ever called the cops. That thing was was LOUD. bansheesandrider
I think your to paranoid. Ive never been bothered up there. Knock on wood lol Then you have been lucky. I have seen them set up a test on the main trail from South Jetty to the open dunes, and check EVERYBODY that goes through. I have seen this also at Win. Bay and the Horsfall- Spinreel areas. I have even seen them use radar to enforce the 10 MPH speed limit on the access trail at Winchester Bay- my buddy got chased all the way back to camp and was given a ticket for going 35. I have seen them do courtesy sound checks and then write a ticket later if they catch you out on the dunes, so I only let them check me if I am heading home.
