janlamarche
i've blown the jugs and pistons on my 99 shee and im wondering what my best option is. It seems like a stock rebuild will be the priciest option. Is getting new sleeves and getting them installed cheaper than buying a whole new aftermarket kit? I was looking on Ebay and you can get a 392 cc big bore kit for around 700$... is it worth it? which is better athena or cheeta cub? will I need bigger carbs or different reeds as well? i wouldnt mind getting more power than before and am wondering what my best option is under 1000$ Thanks for the help
sheerider11
Under a thousand? And you asked about the cheetah top end? Are you sure you can't bore it? If anything, you can get a new top end on here pretty cheap.
willardwright59
athenas are only good running cylinders if u have them ported. which is an additional $300+ depending on type. what i would do is post a wanted ad here for a top end. look for someone selling ported cylinders, thatll be a big power difference. thats just my opinion. ticktock
Used prices for a 4mil crank 325-350$, used ported 4mil cylinders 400$ish, wiseco pistons 187$, a cool head with domes 225$ish, gaskets and seals 80$. Cub or Serval kit 1500$ish. Includes all you need. Not many here are fans of Athena kits, almost everyone agrees with CP is the best on the market. Keep watching the for sale section and don't jump on the first eBay add you see. Give Brandon at Wildcard a call, what you have is prolly salvageable. stokes77
How bad is the top end? You sure you cant just rebore the cylinders and buy new pistons?
350333
just bore it to the next size and get a piston kit and gaskets cheapest way to go.
bluebanshee98
your best option is to get out your credit card and go 4 mil or higher and port it. i got all my parts for my 4 mil ported engine for 1508 shipped from kevin at hjr. i went from a stock stroke completly stock motor to a 4 mil dune port and will never look back! the addiction is pretty bad i wanna go bigger when the top end goes

You topend with pistons will pull 500$ from eBay. That's less than 600$ to get a cub/serval Adam

I'm not a 100% sure but from what i read I could get a 392 athena or 392 cub without changing the crank, reads and carbs. I'd probably change those soon after but at least i wouldnt have to get everything at once. as for boring to the next size over, i know for a fact that my local machine shop is going to charge me a ridiculous amount to do it, so i'd have to send my jugs somewhere? can you even bore the sleeve or do i need new sleeves? And im new to the term porting, is that something that gets done by a machine shop as well? and can i order a top end kit thats already ported that wouldnt require changing the crank? Larry's Shee
Porting is done by a porter who is experienced at it. Could be looked at as free hand machining Are you sure your cylinders are maxed out wear wise?
ticktock
Call up Brandon at Wildcard Racing. He will set you up man. If there was any carnage to your motor then there could be particles in your cases. You should split them and clean everything. Fine gritty particles from your piston shredding will eat the bearings in the crank.

Gotta get all those little chunks out as said above. as for boring to the next size over, i know for a fact that my local machine shop is going to charge me a ridiculous amount to do it, so i'd have to send my jugs somewhere? can you even bore the sleeve or do i need new sleeves? If you don't have any deep scratches, gouges, or chips taken out of the cylinder wall, and aren't at your maximum bore (66.50mm) you will be able to bore your current cylinders without resleeving. Best bet would be send the jugs out to a site sponsor like fast, hjr, or wildcard and get it bored and buy all your parts from them. And im new to the term porting, is that something that gets done by a machine shop as well? and can i order a top end kit thats already ported that wouldnt require changing the crank? Porting is done by a builder. It is your best bang for your buck. If you are riding a stock engine and want more power I would get it ported. A builder can port a motor to perform however you prefer. Lots of top end/mid range/low end. Even if you buy an athena or cub kit, ideally you would still want to spend the money to get it ported to your specific tastes. Yes, you can just get your top end ported with no modification to your bottom end or crank. If I was you I wouldnt spend the money on new cylinders, if you can get away with it, and get your top end built by a sponsor. Then you can also use the money you saved from the big bore cylinders and spend it on the bottom end. Might as well do it right from the get go and you won't have to worry. Get in touch with a site sponsor and they can really steer you in the right direction.
janlamarche
Thanks so much for all the help guys, I have a good understanding of all my options now, i'll definitely give a call to brandon and see what he can do for me... and i guess ill open up the crank case to clean it out haha on another note, one of my carbs is pretty rough, any suggestions on better replacement carbs, like 32-34 mm?
