Mattoon Clutch Basket Junk after 20hrs of ride time?

Recommended Posts

Have you guy's ever heard anything bad about Mattoon's Products or had any problems with there customer service? I've Got about 20hrs on this Mattoon 8 Plate Extreme Heavy Duty Billet Clutch Basket that I ordered brand new from Mattoon back last December. The last time I rode it was a absolute bitch when it came time to shift. I ask a buddy of mine that owns a local ATV Shop that rides with us what he thought the problem was and he said we would need to jerk the clutch cover off when we got back to the shop. We didn't have time that day so come Monday I ordered a Mull Racing Billet Shift Star and a Forged Kicker Gear and a Clutch Basket Needle Bearing set up that replaced the the Bronze OE Clutch Basket Bushing to help me get through the gears a little easier. When we popped the Clutch Cover off and started dissembling the Clutch Assembly we found out that the new Mattoon Billet Clutch Basket I had installed was pretty much junk and it had caused me to break a Friction Plate.

I didn't figure that I'd have any problems getting this situation resolved Keith or any of the other guys at Mattoon so I sent them a email with these Pictures, a Pay Pal Receipt, and the Hour Meter Reading and ask them to aether refund my money or send me another Billet Clutch Basket. I also ask them if they could get the new Billet Clutch Basket with a Hard Anodized Finish on it to prevent this from happening again and if they couldn't hard anodize the basket for me if they new somebody I could send it to that would. That was last week and I've sent them two more emails and I still haven't got a response.

Do you guys know of anyone else that's had any problems out of Mattoon's products or there Costumer Service? From what I've heard Mattoon is a great company, I'm wanting and plan on buying a set of there Stock 102mm Spread Billet Cases to set my Serval Cylinder Set Up on sometime next winter. My buddy Matt Withrow that owns Withrow Powersport's told me he thought I'd have wear issues with it when we put it in last winter because it didn't have a Hard Anodized Finish on it, but I thought it would be fine because the Stock Basket was Aluminum and it didn't have a Hard Anodized Finish on it and it had lasted from 2004 to 2011 so I figured I'd buy another Billet Basket if I had to seven or eight years later. The Bad part about it is my OE Basket wasn't this bad when I took it out. Like I said I have a Serval Set Up with the following Transmission Upgrades,

  • Driveline Extreme 8 Plate Heavy Duty Trail/Track Clutch Kit
  • Driveline Stealth Lock Up
  • Mattoon Extreme 8 Plate Heavy Duty Clutch Basket
  • Hinson 8 Plate Inner Clutch Hub
  • Mull Racing Billet Shift Star
  • Forged Kicker Gear
  • Clutch Basket Needle Bearing That Replaces the Bronze OE Clutch Basket Bushing
  • Stream-Line Hydraulic Clutch Lever

As yo can see I've invested quite-a-bit of money in my Transmission and Clutch Set Up in a attempt to eliminate any Clutch or Transmission Issues. What do you guys suggest I do from here? I guess I'll see if Hinson makes a8 Plate Hard Anodized Steel Clutch Basket for the Banshee and replace my Mattoon 8 Plate Extreme Heavy Duty Billet Clutch Basket if Mattoon's not going to try to make this right. I know the Steel will be Heavier and probably rob a couple of Horsepower but I built my Banshee for Trail Riding and XC Racing and RELIABILITY over everything else! Just about every time I've had another quad run with my Banshee or beat it it's been because I couldn't get through all the gears.

I've got a mattoon with less then 1hr actual ride time on it starting to groove. Its not bad, but i wasn't expecting to see any wear with this amount of time. I hope this is just a few isolated incidents. I've had great luck with mattoon products and customer service.

Your pictures didn't show. Try again please.

I know of several Mattoon baskets with many seasons on them with no issues at all. If they are not responding to emails try calling them. Not everyone uses email on a regular basis. Keith is a great guy I am sure he will make it right with you.

Did my pictures upload that time? Its grooved so bad that its breaking Clutch Plates. My buddy that owns his own Performance ATV Shop expressed a few concerns when I bought it and we installed it. He didn't like the fact that it Mattoon didn't Hard Anodize the Clutch Basket and the Fingers didn't have oiling windows to increase clutch plate lubrication and disperse heat.

I'll call them and let you guys know what ends up happening. Do you guys know if Hinson makes this Hard Anodized Steel Basket for the Banshee:

Damn, I was hoping Hinson made a Hard Anodized Steel Basket, if they did and I couldn't get this issue resolved with Mattoon I was going to give the Steel Basket a shot. They are proud of them, most of them I've seen were in the $299 range.

I just called them and talked to him about the wear on the basket and and ask him if he had seen my emails. He said he hadn't and he acted like he doubted what I was telling him. He said he had never had a problem with any of there baskets but it was up to me, if I wanted to send him my basket back he would take a look at it and if he felt like there was a problem on their end he would ship me a knew one. The bad part about that deal is the shipping cost on my end and my Banshee being out of commission for at least a week. He said if I sent it USPS Priority Mail he would have it in 3 days, then he would look at it and if he thought there was a problem on there end he would ship me a new basket priority. so I'm looking at a minimum of 7 days with no clutch basket so I can't work it out so I'm not quadless for a weekend.

Personally I don't see how it could be a problem I caused, and I think they should let me ship my basket out priority and email them a tracking number and Mattoon ship me out a new basket the same day, or better yet just look at the pictures and send me a new clutch basket. I don't know.......... He also said hard anodizing clutch baskets was pointless and it really wasn't necessary? If anybody else is having ware issues with Mattoon's Baskets you better contact him now because I'd say if you have any arguable time on it he will be reluctant when it comes to replacing it.

Not being totally familiar with the product, I will say that the hardness of the wear surface is what will determine how it wears. Knowing the hardness of the basket would be good. If it was not heat treated properly, it could be like bubble gum and very ductile. Simply comparing hardness of the plate vs the basket will tell you which will take most of the wear. On the other hand, if the plate is not presenting a uniform flat surface to the basket, that will increase the PSI load or point load on the basket and could damage it. IE if the plates have a ridge or something on the face, that can cause issues.

It is VERY common for people to grind on the face of clutch plates thinking it will fix the problems only to find that the problem got worse. The plate is designed precisely clocked so each load face takes some of the load. If you grind on them, you risk getting them uneven and only a few ears take all the load which can shatter the plates and cause rapid basket wear. On a new basket, this will be obvious by not showing uniform wear on each load face on the basket.

Things to consider I guess....

I guess I'm going to send my Basket back to Mattoon Monday. I'll let you guys know what he says. By the way Brandon your Billet Shift Star is awesome quality! I really haven't got a chance to feel the difference it will make yet because I found the Clutch Basket Problem when we went to install it. While I was in there I did notice my Billet Water Pump Gear I bought from you back last year still looked like brand new.
