banshee dies out/ what are common problems with 99 banshee's?

Ok guys im new to this forum but not new to the forum world..

i just got a 1999 banshee tonight that i traded my yfz450 for and the only problem im having is it wont stay running it wants to die out...

when i let it idle the lights start to dim fast and when i give it gas the lights get real bright im thinking its my charging system/stator is weak or maybe my carbs arent set right/ may need cleaned?

im used to 4 stroke quads and 2 stroke dirtbikes (which i hate dirtbikes lol)

 

are there any common problems the 99s had that i should be aware of?

A real problem I'v noticed with 99 banshees is that rear tires tend to wear very quickly.

 

Most banshees are the same they only changed a couple of things throughout. your problem sounds like jetting your lights are suppose to do that.

 

he just put a new set of rears and a fairly new set of front tires on it and alright ill mess with the carbs and see what he has put into it cause he did say that it is jetted and also has a k&n air filter

Banshees arent suppost to idle for long remember these are 2flat stroke motors that are air cooled. They dont have a battery or a fan like your yfz did there for what really is giving you power is the rotation speed of the crank amping up the stator. That s why the light get brighter as you rev up the gas the only problem with 99 or other banshee are. Destroying your tires and are anti being riding slow lol welcome to the forums

Banshees arent suppost to idle for long remember these are 2flat stroke motors that are air cooled. They dont have a battery or a fan like your yfz did there for what really is giving you power is the rotation speed of the crank amping up the stator. Banshees are liquid cooled. If jetted properly, your bike should just sit there and be able to idle. I wouldnt reccomend letting it idle for extended periods of time, just like with any quad, but a couple minites is fine.

As said above the dimming of the lights is normal.

 

What you should worry about is how it runs through the powerband. If it pulls smooth with no hesitations throughout, all you probably need to do is adjust your idle screws.

 

However if thats not the case then you will have to look into your jetting. The best place to start is with a plug chop. There are articles on this site and on the internet with methods of how to do it. You want to start with a plug chop and get your main jet dialed in and then work down from there to your needle, pilot jet, and air screw.

 

Either way i would definately do a plug chop to make sure your main is dialed in. If the previous owner didnt have it jetted properly you could be running lean and overheat then fry your motor.

Thanks guys it pulls through just fine with no stutter or weak pull so i guess for now im in the clear but ill just see if i can tune the A/F screws right to have a idle for a few seconds cause the only thing ill admit i hate is kick start lol

does it help charge keeping the lights on like how it is with a 04-06 YFZ?

My banshee can idle threw a tank of gas.... Why should it idle?

It can still over heat. The radiator needs airflow to cool. There's no fan to draw air to dissipate the heat. But I agree it's not gonna happen in 5 minutes .
