A hello and couple questions

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum thing, more of my kids than me. My son had a blaster for eight years rode the crap out of it, sold it and bought a banshee. It is a 1998, this is what he tells me it has, T5 exhaust, and a 2 into 1 intake 38mm carb extended swinger, rest is stock.

I know a few things about two strokes as i had to take care of the blaster for eight years.

Now the questions I have are, he wants to get something called cool heads, I searched that and read up on it, looks pretty straight forward, However Is this mod going to do anything with out getting the topend ported? or should we wait?

Second, the brakes on it are not working properly, So I got rebuild kits for the calipers, masters, and new SS lines. To rebuild the calipers are like any other correct i mean use compressed air to remove the front pistons, replaced seals/orings, rubbers, nothing special correct?

Thanks in advance! It's a little hard to navigate the site, I guess it just will take some time?!

welcome.......... all mods really depends on what the rider is looking to achieve but imo i dont think youll benifit from a coolhead all that much.you can achieve the same thing ''minus the interchanable'' domes by sending your stock head out to a sponser or trusted michine shop and have it shaved abit to add some comp.id use the coolhead moneys towards a port job, there youll get the most bang for your buck. there other lil things you can do to add a couple ponys.mod your stock timing plate so the timing can be increased to +4, pop the top off the air box . after any mod check your plugs or do a chop to be sure your jeting is on point.thats the 1st to getting all the bike potential.anyway this is my 2 pennys. ................ as far as brakes im not sure i really dont use them much.... goodluck

Troyzstang has a coolheaded forsale. It is a Prodesign with the studs. You will need some domes, he has 18cc and that would require race gas at sea level or premium at higher altitudes. The big deal with cool heads is being able to change compression, IMO. This can add performance. They do a better job cooling the engine as a bonus. Domes should be custom to you engine but cookie cutter domes are fine on stock motors.

Best bang for the buck, is the adjustable stator plate. 30 bucks on eBay. You can set the timing at +4 degrees on a stock motor with no problems most of the time. Anything more than that I wouldn't do. Est. 2hp gains across the curve.

Porting is the best option but you could always use Vito's super stock pistons. The are milled 1mm on the exhaust port which Vito's has proven to add 8hp.

The banshee crank I a failure, with porting it is highly recommended that you have the crank welded. Most of the sponsors true and weld cranks for $65 dollars. Under high hp the crank will separate and will eventually lead to engine damage so it should not be over looked.

While the 2-1 setup is decent you will also gain more by getting some stock carbs, these can often be picked up on the site for 60-100 w/TORS eliminator kits and sometimes a throttle cable.

You can download a banshee manual below if you do not have one.

We hope you son enjoys the banshee and you should get out and ride it, put him back on a blaster :)

Welcome to the site, information is free here, the site sponsors are awesome with great deals on parts, most of the time beating eBay prices!!

Thanks! I just don't want to start throwing parts on just because his 'buddy" has it! Thanks for the timing mod tip! I think we will give that a go for now and see. Oh and the lid is off and an outerwares was fitted- previous owner.

I see not too many guys are running just one carb, are we loosing some with the current set up? I've never had a two carb motor before but, not afraid to learn!

Thanks!

I guess i should of read this post before i popped the question about dual carbs to the other member! OOps!

I have downloaded and printed that manual- will definetly be needing that! Thank you! +4 timing on the way!

I don't think we will need Race gas for trails and hills, if the blaster was ok with them I'm sure the banshee will have no problems! Oh I do plan to at least take one ride however I had a bad accident at work quite a number of years ago and my right hand only does not have a thumb or index finger so it's a tad bit of a challenge to ride not being able to have a good grip! Sucks to take a pee too as I am right handed! *embarassed*

I do have a plan to build this motor up more than likely next year as it is running pretty good! Unless something happens to it before then!

I am keeping a list of suggestions, and I think I read a post on here earlier about welding the cranks, That is on the list sure would hate to spend a bunch of cash to blow it up in a week!

I see a second banshee coming you're way. Once you get on it and see what its like that's all it takes. These are big boy toys, a lot of members here are 30 + and they still smile ear to ear riding these bikes. Once you start getting HP out of the bike it becomes an addiction.

I wouldn't let that slow you down. There are always ways to adapt things to work.

I knew a guy many years ago that was a paraplegic and rode a Kawasaki Tecate 3 wheeler on the dunes. They put a 2 cable twist throttle on the left and somehow attached the cables to the transmission to shift. They ran the rear brake line up to the front master cylinder. Bungee cords on the footpegs to hold his feet. I never rode with him, but I heard he rode hard.

There's a few guys on here with some decent running single carb bikes. Alot easier to tune while you're learning the bike also. When the time comes for porting and other things that's when I'd switch over. And I wouldn't go to stockers. I'd get a set of smaller keihins or something. They're alot easier to tune than stock carbs. They've got plugs in the bowls like the 38 you have now. Stockers you have to pull the bowls to change main jets.

well it seems that you really don't let alot slow you down.....which is a good thing. if you do care to get into it (as im sure the instant you get that bike up on the pipe ) and begin riding there is also a twist grip throttle like dirt bikes that can be bought for the bike. Hell there's even a grip that has BOTH the thumb throttle AND the twist grip so you can change out...
