New banshee owner, need advice

Just bought a 1995 Banshee from my brother in law for $500. Compression in both cylinders is 120, has a full FMF gold series exhaust, Mikuni carbs, NGK plug wires, and some kind of aftermarket reeds. He was told when he bought it that it was bored out .40 over but doesn't know for sure. The ignition is disconnected and there is a red and brown wire nutted together and a black and black/white wire nutted together, does this seem right? Also, I had it started in the summer, but wasn't able to get it started now, last time it was ran was when i started it but the throttle stuck. Any suggestions on tuning it to get it to run smoothly. What is good to lube the throttle cable to prevent sticking and I took the carbs off today to clean them but didn't take them apart yet, what size jets should I have in there? Any tips or suggestions I greatly appreciate. Thanks !

Also I plan on changing out all the fluids what should I use for gear oil and premix as well as the ratio to mix at and brake fluid? Also is engine ice coolant safe to run too.

dont worry about what jets you need and all the junk..

lets just get it started for now... pull the bowls off the carbs, blow carb cleaner threw the pilot and main... clean any dirt out of them and put them back on. pop the cover off the throttle and spray wd-40 or some sort of penetrating oil and work the cable... before starting the bike make sure you can blip the throttle and the slides return back without hesitation or resistance. For your electrical problems.... I have no help for you there I have no idea what part of the ignitions those are. where exactly are they? it could have been a redneck key by pass but I have no idea... try to look for a wiring diagram for the banshee and go from there. I would definitely pick up a banshee manual next time your at the parts depot.

try this... before u absolutely condemn the bastardized wire job, check to see if the bike is making spark... if it is, then you can atleast get it running and then proceed from there.

I had it started in the summer when I was thinking of buying it and the wires were like that, I took the nuts off and cleaned them up and taped them up real good. I'm gonna clean the carbs tomorrow and check to make sure I have good spark. Also sometimes the choke doesn't stay out it'll just go back in but other times it does, any suggestions on a fix for that? and what is the best oil to use and premix and mix 32:1 ?

Cleaned the carbs up real good today and tried firing her up, but no luck. I tested for spark and I'm not getting any spark. Any suggestions on what to do next to solve this issue?

You should really check out the forum tab titled technical info on the forums main page. I am not a new banshee owner but I am new to this site and its plethora of amazing knowledge and I will tell you there is some amazing information on here. Site member tedd1 wrote an amazingly detailed discussion on the banshee electrical system that will blow your mind. I suggest you read that once or twice, then do some trial and error, if you then have no luck you can be really specific in your posts to get responses from members who can really help you pin point your problem. After you read the post I am refering you to you'll see what i mean because your question of, "any suggestions on what to do next," could get you a hundred different responces leaving you running through your bike all over the place. Hope this helps and good luck. Heres the link.

The choke tube is just a small tube that goes in between the carbs (in line with the choke knob) to allow both carbs to engage the choke circuit. There is a nipple in both carbs inline with the choke knob that this tube connects to.....if it is not connected it will not allow the bike to start easily. Also make sure you have not mixed up the carb parts as some of the parts such as the bowl are side specific.

As mentioned: choke tube. Float bowl with little "BB" on front goes on left "choke" carb. The cutaway (angled slice) faces the air cleaner. Either buy a Clymers repair manual or find the download in tech section. Check that two nubs on outside of flywheel are clean and gap pick-up coil to .018. The manual will have complete wire diagram to sort that out.

Just went over the carbs and I have nothing in between the carbs connecting the choke. Also, I tested some connections with a meter, I'm not sure if I 100% did it correctly, but I got 15.6 ohms from plug boot to plug boot, when I took the boots off I got 5.8 ohms. From the orange and black wires on the coil i got .7 ohms, I didnt remove the coil or the wires so I'm not sure If i did it correctly. I didn't test the stator coil or the pick up coil yet, I'm going to go outside and do that now. To get a correct reading on the coil do I need to remove it completely and just test the two tabs where the wires connect or will I get the same reading how I did it with leaving it mounted and leaving the wires connected?

Alright lets see if we can help out here. First we all need a little more info.

1) Are the tors boxes on the bike? ( do you know what that is? )

2) does the bike have a key switch?

3 ) do you have a camera and a photobucket account?

well start there and then move on.

By the way welcome to BansheeHQ
